This position is located in the Environmental Management Service, Textile Care Processing Section at New Mexico VA Healthcare Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Incumbent performs a variety of work such as sorts soiled linens; inspects for holes, tears, and stains. Incumbent is the Laundry/Linen Worker charged with the operation of a variety of laundry production equipment.

Duties

Incumbent operate processing equipment at or above industry standards. Equipment includes; spreader/feeder/ironer/folder and stacker conveyor, both small and large piece folders. Understands Infection Control measures are to be maintained between soiled side operations and clean textiles, and uses proper aseptic techniques including proper hand hygiene. Incumbent operate other laundry processing equipment at industry standards: lift system, all dryers, small washers, and garment finishing tunnel. Perform required care and maintenance of machines and equipment. Incumbent is cross-trained in all techniques and procedures used within the TCPF in the event of staffing shortages or unforeseen workload and works under strict timeframes and deadlines due to patient workload. Incumbent will assist the Machine Operators, Linen Clerks, Sewing Machine Operator and Truck Driver as necessary. (Valid driver's license required if operating vehicle.) When assisting the Laundry Machine Operators, must have basic knowledge of the operating principles of commercial washing, and knowledge to select the correct wash formula from the provided chart for the selected wash load and basic knowledge of the operation of the cart wash, water and air systems to identify proper operation and the procedure to shut down the equipment if a malfunction occurs. Must be familiar with various chemical agents used by the TCPF to ensure they are properly used to prevent damage to linens, uniforms and any other textile processed. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm (May required to work some evenings and weekends) Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD50004A Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to lift and carry over (30) pounds. Must be able to stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and able to wear PPE for extended period of time as dictated by the work setting. Some heavy movement of laundry carts weighing up to 700 pounds and use of conveyors are required.· During normal day to day operations, individual will be required to perform simple grasping and fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height and frequent stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling. Position routinely requires that individual operate vehicles, electrical equipment and push or pull soiled and clean laundry carts in and out of Laundry truck, to and from loading docks to various locations within the TCPF and medical center. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed inside where there is ample light, heat and/or ventilation. Temperatures vary from hot in the summer to cold in the winter when moving carts into the TCPF. incumbent is intermittently exposed to excess humidity, chemicals and solvents, fumes, dust and noise. individual is exposed to possible contagions from the handling of contaminated linens in performance of emptying laundry bags and sorting soiled linen. Potential exists for sharps exposure in soiled linen. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls and other injuries, and to disagreeable odors in the performance of required duties.
