Duties

You will assist with installing, measuring, and fitting heavy mobile equipment components (e.g. fan belts, hose, oil, air, fuel, coolant filters, pistons, valves, bearings, gears, bearings) for operational performance. You will read and interpret instructions, standards, job orders, drawings, and blueprints to determine the overall inspection needs and quality checkpoints for heavy mobile equipment repair work. You will use hand tools (e.g. screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, files, hacksaws, hammers), when executing maintenance on heavy equipment. You will troubleshoot electrical systems on heavy mobile equipment using gauges and diagnostic equipment to verify repairs are completed.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You may be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.
  • You may be required to serve on-call duty on a rotational basis. When on-call, incumbent is required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.
  • NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

The purpose of this position is to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the full performance level of the target grade. In a controlled work situation and under the direction of the first line supervisor, work leader and/or mechanic, or journey worker, you will perform progressively more difficult work tasks associated with this trade. These tasks are oriented around a list of work processes approved for each trade. At the WG-02 level, you will be assigned to a journey worker who works with and instructs you in performing duties common to the trade in a safe, efficient manner. Detailed instructions are provided on new assignments along with close supervision and detailed review. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Repairing, maintaining, and overhauling complex systems on a wide assortment of heavy mobile equipment and specialized equipment and systems in accordance with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles; 2) Diagnosing and troubleshooting malfunctions in heavy mobile equipment; 3) Conducting functional and performance tests on completed work assignments.
