Duties
This is a Career-Seasonal appointment. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately March to December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
Duties:
Provides operational oversight and support to multiple campgrounds across the northern section of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Responsible for the supervision, training and coaching of subordinate staff and volunteers. The team generally consists of 5 seasonal recreation fee technicians and up to about 10 volunteer campground hosts.
Communicates verbally and in writing to diverse audiences of internal and external customers. Provides exceptional customer service and support to all visitors and colleagues.
Utilizes RBMS and OTCnet during deposit preparation in the remittance operation. Troubleshoots issues with register equipment and software.
Utilizes various reports on recreation.gov. Updates campground profile information in recreation.gov as needed.
Participates in hiring and training seasonal employees and volunteer campground hosts.
Area Information:
The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the southern crest of the Appalachian Mountains through Virginia and North Carolina connecting Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The primary duty station for this location will be in Floyd, VA in the Plateau District of the Blue Ridge Parkway. For information on Floyd, Virginia and the surrounding areas visit: https://floydcova.gov and https://floydchamber.org . The Floyd, VA area is at 2,493 feet elevation. The area has 4 distinct seasons. Winter high temperatures generally average in the 20's while summer highs generally average in the 80's.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/30/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
To qualify for this position at the GS-08 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Supervisory Recreation Fee Technician, GS-0503-08. This experience includes activities such as: leading and training other in collecting appropriate fees following established accountability guidelines; leading and training others in operating an electronic cash register; leading and training others in completing shift reports to verify money collected, accountable stock sold, and all transactions from the shift; and resolving issues that arise in the remittance process and assisting staff with fee issues. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
