All locations are in RUS GS Rate except for Canon City which is CO Springs GS Rate. We expect to fill 3 vacancies at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.
Duties
Collects and compiles forest and woodland management data regarding location, size, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber.
Collects forest inventory data from timber cruises, prepares timber sales, performs timber markings in forest development projects, road layout projects, and other work.
Inspects and reports on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements
Marks or otherwise designates timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposals.
Collects information for, and prepares necessary reports on, forest and woodland trespass cases.
Compiles maps of forest and woodland areas, cutover areas, burned areas, and special use areas.
Examines timber stands to determine need for, or thoroughness of, insect and disease control work.
Collects information from records or in the field to be used in the development and revision of a variety of planning and other documents.
Collects field data and documents findings. Compiles maps of forest and woodland areas, cutover areas, burned areas, and special use areas. Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Requirements

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-04 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
In order to be rated as qualified for a GS-0462-04 Forestry Technician, you must have: 6 months of general work experience (any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation) AND6 months of specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience include: forestry aid or tech work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use; forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.
OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate level education. Undergraduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
In order to be rated as qualified for a GS-0462-05 Forestry Technician, you must have: one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level or pay band in the Federal service) that includes performing the following duties:assisting in inspecting cutover areas on current sales for compliance with terms of timber sales contracts; assisting in investigating suspected timber trespass cases including locating and identifying trespass sites, quantities, etc.; and examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control work.
OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate level education. Undergraduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-06 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
In order to be rated as qualified for a GS-0462-06 Forestry Technician, you must have: one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level or pay band in the Federal service) that includes performing the following duties:assisting in inspecting cutover areas on current sales for compliance with terms of timber sales contracts; assisting in investigating suspected timber trespass cases including locating and identifying trespass sites, quantities, etc.; forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work; and examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control work.
OR
Successful completion of one year of graduate education in a subject-matter field directly related to the position. Related courses of study include: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate level education. Undergraduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough and slippery terrain, wet weather, insects, snakes, deadfalls and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
