Duties

Prepares and presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs including guided walks, education programs, snowshoe hikes, evening programs, children's programs, orientation talks and demonstrations to a wide variety of audiences. Learns park resources by reviewing published maps, park research materials, and other documents previously prepared by park rangers and other professionals and by talking with park staff. Responsible for presenting a variety of curriculum-based education programs to students of various ages and backgrounds using existing program outlines. Work with teachers and educators to present existing onsite and offsite education programs throughout the Lakeshore and surrounding area. Assist with education events including service learning projects, curriculum-based events and community programs. Provide park orientation and NPS introductions to students. Lead schoolgroups on guided hikes, snowshoe hikes, hands-on activities, demonstrations and classroom programs. Present accurate information appropriate for the student's grade level. Informs visitors about park facilities and resources through roving interpretation. Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material, e.g., projectors, microphones, video equipment and distance learning equipment. Creates and posts content for social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube. Uses and develops interpretive props and other materials needed for programs. Operates park radio, phone and computer to communicate with park staff and visitors. Represents the National Park Service at special events and other outreach activities. May respond in writing to letters from the public, prepare or update park handouts, and write or review information for publication. Operates motor vehicles in various traffic conditions. May be assigned to work at locations throughout the Lakeshore as needed.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/28/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: making oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include Park Guide or tour leader; museum or observatory guide; docent; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; teaching assistant; or other similar work. You must include start/end months and hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4 years of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in American history, science, and/or public speaking, or a bachelor's degree supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in American history, science, and/or public speaking. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
