Duties

You will maintain hand tools and equipment (e.g., substations, ground level switches) for power distribution. You will determine excessive current flow or other signs of improper electrical systems. You will locate breakdowns and trouble spots on transmission lines by visual inspection or testing. You will service lines, substations, transformers, insulators, converters, regulator, cables, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, circuit breakers, fuse, ground connects, mechanical and electronic control systems and other circuit elements. You will troubleshoot cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance, or cable breaks using such common electrical test devices as voltmeter, ohmmeter and Megger. You will work above ground on overhead platforms to string overhead wires and set proper wire tension in accordance with strength and weight of wires. You will work on underground lines running wires or cable through tunnels on conduit or lays protected cables in trenches. You will troubleshoot distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment to locate and correct the cause of outages and improper operation; makes emergency cutouts and substations of power line. You will check condition of transformers, switches and cable, test insulating oil of transformers and oil switches for breakdown and contamination.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.
  • May be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.
  • May be required to serve on-call duty on a rotational basis. When on-call, you are required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the WG-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION INCLUDING: 1) Following instructions to repair high voltage electrical power-generating and distribution equipment (e.g., generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments, and control systems); 2) Reading circuit drawing and diagrams to identify electrical problems; 3) Using safety equipment such as hot sticks, rubber blankets, and insulated gloves when working on energized high voltage electrical systems. NOTE: This information must be supported in your resume to be considered for the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). The employee may perform moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up 40 pounds and occasionally, may lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Uses block and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. Crouches , stands, kneels, and stoops while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and outdoors, May be exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. May be exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. May be subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from galls from poles and strains from awkward work positions. May be exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches. May be required to wear protective devices such as earplugs, safety hates, and nonconductive gloves and footwear.
