Duties

The incumbents of these positions is required to perform at the journeyman level and will work independently as well as instruct staff on operating traditionally rigged, schooners and square-rigged sailing vessels. Duties include going aloft; rigging and handling sails; striking yards and topmasts to deck and sending them back aloft; working the capstan; striking and rigging blocks and running rigging; tensioning standing rigging; repairing and making new both running and standing rigging, using the traditional skills of worming, parceling, serving, splicing, seizing, and tarring. Physical Demands: Frequently exerts heavy physical effort by lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects up to 50 pounds, and more with assistance, sometimes using entire body weight to load tag lines or move suspended loads into position. Incumbent works with and around power equipment, in close, narrow confines and from decks, masts. yards, booms, scaffolds, ladders and boatswains chairs where slippery and unstable footing and awkward and uncomfortable positions are often necessary. Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside in all types of weather, usually in and around ships and on docks. Incumbent must use care in working with specific tools and equipment to prevent serious accidents. Incumbent may be required to work various days and hours, shift work, and be required to operate a motor vehicle as an incidental part of these duties. Must wear prescribed maintenance uniform and safety equipment according to established standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Have the ability to do the work of a Historic Ship Rigger WG-5801-10 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) This includes work history that demonstrates performing the full range of the most difficult and complex Historic Ship Rigger duties as a Rigger on a 19th Century or earlier traditional square-rigged vessel. Including removal and replacement of rigging and mooring gear; measure, splice, serve, seize, and install new rigging. Lay out patterns for canvas work and sew covers, awnings, and or other canvas gear by traditional palm, needle, and bench hook. Instruct sub-journeymen level riggers in the historically accurate standards of seamanship, vessel maintenance, and rigging techniques. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
