This position is located within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) with one vacancy located in Pomeroy, WA.
This is a TERM appointment. Appointments to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed (NTE) 13 months and may be extended up to 10 years without further competition.
Duties
As a Biological Science Technician you would perform the following duties:
Collects multiple species samples for run-reconstruction monitoring, adult salmonids previously tagged with passive integrate transponder (PIT) tags for transportation and life history studies, untagged steelhead for adult PIT-tag studies, and adult salmonids for radio telemetry studies (with both tagging and tag removal conducted at the adult trap).
Operates and maintains adult fish trap at a hydropower dam in accordance with the Fish Passage Plan such that it reduces risk to handled adult salmonids and steelhead and operate and maintain large scale juvenile salmonid tagging facility and prepare scale sample envelopes, print genetic sample pages, label and prepare sample vials, print data collection sheets, and any other products that may be needed for scale and tissue samples taken during sampling; assist in the handling, tagging, and examination of tags and injuries of adult salmonids.
Coordinate with other agencies or people within your command to provide information and expertise on the execution of operating the adult and juvenile fish collection facilities and in gather information on needs from fishery traps for sampling protocols and supplies along with needs to perform major trap repairs and provide assistance in areas such as salmonid research, analysis and interpretation of results along with proposal writing.
Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZT-2 or GS-08 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
- Operating and maintaining high volume (thousands of fish annually / please show in resume) non-terminal adult fish traps.
- Assist with organizing and operating large scale (i.e.30,000 / please show in resume) juvenile salmonid tagging operations using run-of-river fish
- Collecting and processing morphometric data from living, anesthetized salmonids or other fish
- Preparing for and collecting samples of scales and other tissue
- Entering, maintaining, and editing biological data on written work sheets and databases as it relates to adult salmonids and steelhead
OR
EDUCATION: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree including scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics
OR
COMBINATION: A combination of related graduate-level education and specialized experience. NOTE: Only graduate education in excess of one year is qualifying for combination.
Education
College Transcript: If you are qualifying based on education, submit a copy of your college transcript that lists college courses detailing each course by the number and department (i.e., Bio 101, Math 210, etc.), course title, number of credit hours and grade earned. You must submit evidence that any education completed in a foreign institution is equivalent to U.S. education standards with your resume. You may submit an unofficial copy of the transcript at the initial phase of the application process. If course content cannot be easily identified from the title of the course as listed on your transcript, you must submit an official course description from the college/university that reflects the content at the time the course was taken.
Note: Your college transcript is used to verify successful completion of degree, or college course work. An official college transcript will be required before you can report to duty.
