This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in North Little Rock, AR. The person in this position prepares nutritious, high qualify meals for service to the Veterans. The incumbent may be required to work at the North Little Rock or the Little Rock campus based on the needs of the service.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Independently prepares and cooks a variety of items including regular and therapeutic diet (diabetic, low sodium, low protein, gluten free, etc.) entrees and dessert items Follows menus, production sheets, and recipes to prepare items in the quantity needed Grills eggs, meat patties, pancakes, French toast; broils meats; makes cold sandwich fillings and assembles a variety of sandwiches Uses a variety of methods to prepare meats, fish, and poultry including broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing, braising, and grilling Slices meat items by hand, confirming to specific size requirements or weight specifications Prepares fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables; bakes frozen potatoes, pre-made cookie dough, and muffin batters Prepares and heats convenience items, and prepares pureed foods and adjusts consistency with thickeners Washes, peels, and cuts fruits and vegetables; assembles and mixes salad ingredients and dessert items, including gelatin molds and fruit crisps Plans cooking processes to produce meals on time and at the proper temperature which may require coordination of cooking several items with different cooking times Makes a variety of desserts such as cobblers, brownies, cookies, and pastries Weighs, measures, and assembles ingredients for regular and modified diets Operates a variety of kitchen equipment and follows appropriate safety procedures Follows sanitary food handling procedures Disassembles and reassembles equipment for cleaning Cleans and sanitizes work areas, and performs deep cleaning tasks when needed Operates industrial dish machine Performs other related duties Work Schedule: Other- tour to be determined Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.-AND- TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-03 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Have (6) months of general experience which equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health Aid, GS-3. General Experience is: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.-OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed 1 (one) year of study post high school that included study in medical, health, or related fields. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.-OR- COMBINATION: Have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and general experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. If education is used to meet general experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationsCustomer ServiceHazardous MaterialsPatient Care IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The Health Aid is required to be on his/her feet continually during the work shift and must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, push, pull and lift. Work is manual labor requiring good physical stamina, occasionally requiring moderate to heavy lifting, pushing or pulling.
