The position performs all duties of a journeyman Locksmith and is assigned to the Carpenter Shop within the Maintenance and Operations Section of Engineering Service.
Duties
Duties include:
Performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations.
Oversees a computerized system of records.
Reviews drawings/blueprints provided to determine each type of lock for new construction projects.
Selects appropriate materials considering such factors as strength needed and hardness, machining characteristics, environmental factors, and the extent to which the materials used could complicate or hamper the use of standard neutralization techniques.
Uses small hand tools such as files, tweezers, tension wrenches, as well as the adjustment and use of powered tools common to the trade such as key duplicating and coding machines, grinders and stamping machines.
Conducts investigations to determine if locking devices have been tampered with.
Discusses special locking requirements and determines suitable locks to be used in solving security problems.
Performs visual and operational checks to locate trouble sources and determine best methods of correcting problems.
Maintains blank keys of all known locking devices, cuts keys required for issue and replacement as required. Ensures absolute key control and monitors the key accountability system in use.
Generates electronic reports, lock, key audits, and maintain electronic records.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:Physical Effort Position is required to be able to lift 50 pounds and walks, bends, stoops, stands and works in close spaces for long periods of time. Working Conditions Position works in a fully-secured lockshop containing all required tools, equipment and materials, and performs 60% of preliminary work therein. The remainder of the time is spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, scrapes and bruises. Must wear shields for protection when operating key cutting machine and electric grinder.
