The Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO) position is located at the Tomah, WI VA Medical Center and operates patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles.

Duties

Duties include: Operates passenger bus with a minimum capacity of 16 passengers, equipped with air brakes and hydraulic lifts used to load wheelchair passengers; sedans, mini-vans, 12 passenger vans equipped with wheelchair lifts, patient litters, portable cots, and O-2; 8, 5, and 4 passenger medical transport vans equipped with portable cots and O-2 under 26,000 pounds GVWR in support of patient, staff, and material transport to various medical facilities and outside state organizations. Vehicles are operated on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules over freeways, state and county roads and rural roads with blind curves and intersections, in all kinds of weather and at times when road conditions are considered hazardous. Picks up and delivers specimens (patient body fluids and tissue samples), patient records, X-Rays, CT scans, and MRI's between Tomah VA, Madison VA, and Tomah Memorial, Sparta, and La Crosse hospitals. At times will be required to deliver Cadavers to various morgues for autopsies. Performs administrative duties associated with various trips taken to ensure proper data collection. Prepares and prioritizes trip requests in accordance with established policy and procedures and adjusts the dispatch log to reflect changes as necessary. Must have the ability to operate modern mobile devices and equipment and utilize the proper hand free devices IAW State and Federal driving regulations. Operates two dump trucks, one under 26,000 pounds and one over 26,000 pounds (can operate vehicle up to 32,000 pounds). Utilizes hand tools (rakes, shovels, etc.), power tools (lawn mowers, chain saws, etc.) and self-propelled equipment (sod cutter, various sized mowers up to the 4 ton, 80 hp Toro 5900/10, and various sized tractors with assorted attachments and various snow removal equipment up to 32,000 pounds GVWR) while maintaining the Medical Center turf, flower/shrub beds, trees and roads. The incumbent operates grounds maintenance equipment using walk behind equipment which may be pushed or powered by a small gas or electric motor. Operates tractors, with pulled, rear-mounted or belly mounted equipment such as drags, sprayers, aerator, edger's, spreaders, mowers, etc. Will operate bobcat loader and dump trucks with front mounted equipment such as snowplows, snow blowers, augers, etc., to accomplish duties such as general lawn maintenance, rough grading, raking and snow removal. Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles and ground maintenance equipment; checking fluid levels, wiper blades, lights, cleans and services motorized equipment such as oiling, greasing, changing filters, belts and changing/sharpening blades for cutters and mowers. Ensures fluids from equipment are disposed of in accordance with established policies. Snow removal, working with de-icing compounds, shrubbery, pruning, and trimming, weeding and removing trees, shrubs, etc., as directed in the performance of the general duties. Must also pick up trash from various outdoor containers and general turf areas for disposal. The incumbent will follow established safety procedures when using and motorized equipment, chain saws, tractors, mowers and other vehicular equipment for the safeguard of self, patients, and employees. All of the equipment the incumbent is required to have working knowledge and ability to operate equipment that may have controls, switches, levers, power take-off shafts, etc., which if not operated correctly could become a safety hazard. Perform additional duties assigned by service. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Drivers operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent) and areexposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Incumbent will exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Greater physical effort is needed to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles. Patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending.
