This position is located within the defined boundaries of the Charles George VA Medical Center and the Western North Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The incumbent controls the physical access to VA controlled properties by utilizing screening protocols for staff, students, contractors, Veterans and visitors that enter the Asheville VA Medical Center.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Security Screeners include but are not limited to the following:
Ensures the compliance of employees, patients, visitors, and vendor/contractors by providing screening protocols to prevent unauthorized physical access of persons and or tangible materials from being introduced onto or in Medical Center building(s) and or controlled properties under the direct supervision of the VA Police Service.
Performs and conducts screening duties and responsibilities designed to effectively control and identify unauthorized access by utilizing physical and verbal access control screening criterion and following procedural processes to regulate compliance.
Determines those persons authorized to enter and remain on VA controlled properties and buildings.
Serves as the first Point of Contact for all persons coming and leaving the Medical Center and associated Community Based Our-Patient Centers.
Conducts screening for basic pandemic specific related events, and or circumstance where security has been elevated requiring greater security prudence.
Performs additional enhanced screening involving employed methods for the screening inspection of carried material/packages, and or the use of metal detection equipment and wands.
Provides and monitors compliance to vehicular and pedestrian access to VA controlled properties and buildings at designated access control entrances of the Asheville VAMC or specified CBOCs.
Maintains a physical presence while monitoring and controlling ingress/egress to VA property ensuring people accessing the facility have a genuine need to do so.
Provides for the safety and security of the Medical Center while at entry control points by controlling both vehicular and pedestrian traffic movement and being observant for suspicious or illegal behavior.
Directs and controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic flows during peak periods to avoid congestion and back-ups, while maintaining an awareness for safety in keeping vehicles and pedestrians orderly.
Performs other duties, as assigned.
Work Schedule: 80 hours (Bi-Weekly) Specific Shift to be Determined by the needs of the service

Physical Requirements: Work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending and similar activities and occasional lifting and carrying of objects of 25 pounds or less such as temporary traffic signs and traffic cones. Callback and emergency posts are frequently required. Additionally, callback and emergency posts may be required during periods of increased National Threat Levels or other local incidents.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the date of appointment.GS-04 grade level:
One year of general experience
OR
Applicants may substitute two-years above high school education for the experience required for the GS-4 level.
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-4 level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
