This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
The duties of the Nurse Manager include, but are not limited to:
Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level
Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact clients and staff, including initiating and participating in ethics consultations
Manages program resources (financial, human, material, or informational) to facilitate safe, effective, and efficient care
Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process at the unit level to improve patient care outcomes
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the delivery of patient care
Uses sound judgement in making decisions and identifying/analyzing/resolving patient care and staff problems that impeded the delivery of patient care
Evaluates and determines qualifications of prospective staff members and makes recommendations for retaining, hiring, and/or transferring staff
Assesses and evaluates staff performance according to performance standards and dimensions of professional practice
Effectively supervises, guides, and counsels nursing and/or other staff personnel
Develops staff for patient care leadership assignments
Follows up on all incidents involving patients, staff, and visitors in a timely fashion according to policy and procedure
Follows up on all reports of medication errors, discrepancies, reactions, and adverse reactions immediately according to policy and procedure
Clarifies directions provided to other personnel and follows up to verify completion of assignments
Communicates and enforces nursing and medical center policies and procedures
Prepares and conducts monthly staff meetings, maintaining a record of these staff meeting attendance and minutes
Develops unit specific competencies; evaluates and verifies these on an annual basis
Acquires knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice
Participates in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and enhance role performance
Identifies staff learning needs and arranges educational programs to meet these needs
Establishes a goal directed client/family significant other OR staff group and leads the group over a period to attain goals
Actively serves as a resource person and/or coordinator for a defined group of clients with a common health care need
Educates colleagues and/or students and serves as a preceptor and/or mentor
Identifies problem areas for monitoring and evaluation, active in analyzing findings and changing practice based on quality improvement findings with resultant improvement in client care
Assures compliance to quality standards, such as Joint Commission, for assigned areas and service line areas
Works under the general supervision of the Associate Chief Nurse of Ambulatory services and ultimately to the Associate Director of Patients services/Chief Nurse Executive
Completes work assignments with relative independence and minimal guidance, personally setting the deadlines for work completions

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
For Applicants enrolled in MSN Bridge or Non-traditional courses of study: The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
BSN or Masters Degree in Nursing
3-5 years of Med/Surg experience
2-3 years of Primary Care or Specialty Care experience
1 year of Hematology/Oncology/Radiation experience
2-3 years current or recent experience (in the last three years) of management experience
Experience coaching/mentoring others
