Duties

As a Physician (Public Health) you will: Serve as scientific/medical consultant for assigned grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements with State and local health departments, community-based organizations, and other governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations who collaborate with CDC, State and local researchers and provide medical and health services research expertise in developing, monitoring, and revising study protocols, data collection instruments, questionnaires, and related documentation for new and ongoing projects for the prevention of diseases. Review organization and data collection methods of project sites to ensure that standardized protocols are properly implemented. Analyze data collected and compiled from intramural and extramural practices and studies of specific disease prevention. Perform clinical and health services research studies to obtain information pertinent to the research problem being studied. Review health service research and evaluation reports and evaluate data collected from the research studies. Work with program managers, policy makers, and experts in the fields of public health and health services research from across CDC as well as from other Federal agencies, state and local health departments, and nongovernmental organizations to improve the quality and scientific rigor of health services research and evaluation. Review research and evaluation proposals and protocols, and provide substantial recommendations regarding policy implications, design, methodology, and programmatic impact. Apply a thorough knowledge of health services research methodology and extramural procurement procedures and responsibilities to develop contracts and task orders to assess disease prevention programs, policies, and managerial issues. Apply professional knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of disease prevention research, the incumbent represents CDC as a project officer or technical monitor on research projects and contracts.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association(external link); Association of American Medical Colleges(external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education(external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates(external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GP-13 grade level, you must have at least three years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GP-12 grade level which must include the following experience: implementing and evaluating medical activities related to disease prevention public health programs. Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
