Duties

As the leader you will pass instructions to other workers received from supervisor, and assign tasks to be performed to individual members of the group. Ensure plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available and that needed stocks are obtained from supply locations. Check work in progress, check for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Demonstrate proper work methods and answer questions regarding procedures. Provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, cause of delays, and overall work operations and problems. Inspect welds by performing visual, dimensional and/or dye penetrant. Ensure proper metals, alloys, joint configurations and weld filler materials are used to achieve desired results.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be certified through the standards of the American Welding Society within 6 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welder Leader~ without more than normal supervision: performing welding duties using electric, oxyacetylene, and/or inert gas-shielded welding processes. Working with light, heavy and hardened metals working in positions such as flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead. Performing preheating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding and/or heat treating to produce desired results. Using templates, jigs, blueprints and/or other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items and welding metal parts and structures. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentDexterity and SafetyKnowledge of MetalsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling that may be done in awkward and cramped positions. Frequently handles objects weighing from 20 to 45 pounds in setting up work and equipment and in completing assignments. Incumbent seeks assistance from coworkers, operates lifts, or overhead hoist for items in excess of 45 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done indoors and outdoors, sometimes in bad weather; in areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. Welding involves exposure to fumes; infrared and ultraviolet radiation; heat and flying sparks; the glare of torches and heated materials; the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, and broken bones; and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. The majority of work is performed on concrete floors or as required on or in equipment being repaired. Subject to contamination from unusually hazardous agents and to potential explosions while welding equipment in designated hazard areas or locations. Danger to self due to exposure to unusually hazardous agents is compensated for by premium pay; no credit has been given this element in establishing the grade level for this job.
