The physical therapist are responsible for independently providing assessment and treatment interventions to inpatients and outpatients received through health care provider referrals and patient self-referrals, for individual patients or groups of patients to relieve pain, restore or enhance performance, and maximize ability to function as independently as possible, and facilitate wound healing. The primary function of the physical therapist is direct patient care.

Duties

The duties of this position include but are not limited to the following: The therapist will serve as a primary physical therapist in PM&R and will spend most of his/her time in this area. May require travel to Fischer clinic and others based on clinic needs. The therapist will have the predominant responsibility for treatment of all patients referred to PM&R outpatient and telehealth and occasional inpatients. The therapist plans, implements, evaluates, and documents specific physical therapy examinations, and demonstrates skill in administering appropriate tests and measurements to assess patient's functional abilities. The therapist develops a treatment program with ongoing evaluation that maintains progress towards established goals and products provided in the electronic medical record in a timely fashion. The therapist will be a member of an interdisciplinary team of professionals and will attend and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and communicate, consult, and work cooperatively with other team members to provide comprehensive patient care. The therapist consults with the Physical Therapy supervisor regarding specific clinical problems or questions The therapist is involved with the treatment of veterans from the specialty care group, including meetings with professionals from other disciplines. The therapist will also participate in planning meetings related to the group such as performance improvement, strategy, etc. The therapist may render treatment decisions in conjunction with other physical therapists who treat patients in the specialty care group on a temporary basis or for purposes of training. The therapist provides clinical instruction and oversight, supervises, and co-signs for physical therapy assistants and students and monitors the activities of the physical therapy assistants, students, and volunteers. The therapist will have the predominant responsibility for treatment of all patients referred to PM&R outpatient and telehealth and occasional inpatients. *This is a Full-time Temporary position Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education and experience: The individual must meet at least one of the requirements below: Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. OR; Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. OR; Doctorate degree in physical therapy. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). English Language Proficiency. Individuals appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA must be proficient in written and spoken English. See Chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part GS-12: In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, hold a valid unrestricted state license and demonstrate all the KSAs below: Ability to make autonomous clinical decisions in a Direct Access environment. This includes ability to independently evaluate and treat patients who seek physical therapy services. Skill in performing examinations and evaluations of individuals who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to conditions of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems while considering the effects attributable to unique psychosocial and environmental factors. Ability to interpret findings from examination and evaluation, select appropriate test and measures, and integrate findings into the physical therapy plan of care for the full range of patient populations. Ability to establish a diagnosis within the scope of physical therapy and identify the appropriate rehabilitation intervention, including referral to another provider for further consultation as clinically indicated. Ability to determine physical therapy prognosis by incorporating examination findings with the patient's preferences in order to set clinically appropriate treatment goals, optimize outcomes and maximize functional independence. Ability to independently provide clinical oversight of Physical Therapy Assistants as well as students on clinical affiliations who are in Doctoral PT Programs or PTA Programs. **Knowledge of CERNER is a plus. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-11 to GS-12. Physical Requirements: The therapist provides clinical instruction and oversight, supervises, and co-signs for physical therapy assistants and students and monitors the activities of the physical therapy assistants, students, and volunteers. Part of this position will involve sedentary work involving computers and communications.
