The Laundry Machine Operator position is located in the Environmental Management Service of the Lake City VA Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for operation of washer/dryer units during loading, processing, and unloading of units and may be utilized to operate other equipment within the laundry such as conveyor system, cart dumps, lifts, ironers, and small piece folder.

Duties

The Laundry Machine Operator position is responsible for operation of washer/dryer units during loading, processing, and unloading of units. Duties include but are not limited to: Performs a full range of laundry machine operator tasks associated with a consolidated laundry operation. Proper classification of soiled linen during soil sorting, assures that proper chemicals are being used and that quality and quantity level of linen production are met. Assuring proper washer/tumbler settings for fabrics and transport of linen to and from units using conveyor systems. Operating other equipment within the laundry such as conveyor system, cart dumps, lifts, ironers, and small piece folder. Observes quality of work to ensure all furnished products are acceptable. Maintains the cleanliness of the laundry and equipment and may be called on the perform additional tasks associated with the operation of the finishing area. Reads and writes to understand and carry out policies and work procedures. Observes all safety regulations and be constantly alert to avoid injury to self and others. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/28/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent needs strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for a long period. Incumbent will be pulling dirty laundry, wet laundry, heavy carts, lifting heavy bundles over fifty (50) pounds. Incumbent will be standing and walking continuously. Incumbent is required to utilize a monorail system with fully loaded slings. This will require pushing and pulling overhead. Incumbent must possess the limited ability to bend, stoop, climb and reach. The employee may be required to stand on hard concrete floors. Incumbent will be working in an environment that is noisy, hot/wet, and humid. Incumbent is constantly exposed to minor bruises, minor cuts and strains. Incumbent works with linen that is exposed to blood and other fluids that could be contaminated. Incumbent must be capable of wearing protection devices, caps, gowns, masks, etc.
