Incumbent is a Laundry Machine Operator/Washman charged with the overall operation and daily start up activities of the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF); which include, but are not limited to, having in depth knowledge and care of all laundry washroom equipment, chemicals and procedures. Incumbent works with minimal direction from the laundry supervisor, adjusting wash flow as needed to maximize efficiency and meet production standards; as well as, patient needs.

Duties

Major duties include but is not limited to: Total operation of a six module Continuous Wash Extract system (CWES), which has the ability to process six different wash classifications at once, one automated linen transfer system, one, four pocket pass-through Top Side Loader, one 100 lb. conventional washer, one 65 lb. conventional washer, three 300 lb. integrated gas fire dryers, one 150-pound single stage hydraulic press extractor, two 170 lb. gas fire, free standing dryers and one gas fire steam garment tunnel system. General daily maintenance as well as a daily startup/shut down inspection of production equipment including flatwork processing systems, small piece folding/stacking systems, and various high production processing equipment used throughout the TCPF. Has knowledge and skill to: sort soiled linens, pre-soak stained textiles as needed, accurately weigh wash loads to ensure washer/extractors are correctly balanced, wash soiled textiles, and unload clean textiles. Has the appropriate knowledge and skill to build and maintain linen inventory tracking and ordering spreadsheets to ensure a seamless, automated ordering and inventory management program. Have a comprehensive knowledge of the correct and safe operating principles of an industrial washing system to adjust/edit the specific cycles or programs for specialty items; including a thorough knowledge of the application of the "Wash Wheel" with regards to chemical, mechanical action, time and temperature to select the correct wash formula from the provided chart for the selected wash classification. Understands and apply verbal and written instructions pertaining to all phases of the laundry washroom techniques. This includes the ability to communicate with the "clean side" machine operators, Linen Clerk, Laundry Supervisor, and Laundry Operations Manager to ensure efficient linen flow on the production floor and responding to changing linen requirements as necessary. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and be able to wear the required PPE for extended periods of time as dictated by the work setting. Some heavy movement of laundry carts weighing up to 700 pounds and use of conveyors are required. During normal day to day operations, individual will be required to perform simple grasping and fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height and frequent stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling. Position routinely requires operating of vehicles, electrical equipment, push or pull soiled and clean laundry carts in and out of Laundry truck, to and from loading Page 4 of 5 docks to various locations within the TCPF and medical center. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed inside where there is ample light, heat and/or ventilation. Temperatures vary from hot in the summer to cold in the winter when moving carts into the TCPF. Incumbent is exposed to operational noises associated with an industrial laundry and may be required to use hearing protection if occupational exposure exceeds acceptable occupational exposure thresholds. Incumbent is intermittently exposed to excess humidity, chemicals and solvents, fumes, dust and noise. Individual is exposed to possible contagions from the handling of contaminated linens in performance of emptying laundry bags and sorting soiled linen. Potential exists for sharps exposure in soiled linen. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls and other injuries, and to disagreeable odors in the performance of required duties.
