The employee works within the Maintenance Division of Facilities Engineering Service at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.
Duties
The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. Major duties listed but not limited to:
Perform journeyman level duties on but not limited to: high-pressure piping systems, autoclaves, washer sterilizers, automatic and manual control valves, heat exchangers, economizer systems, liquid movers, flash tanks, pressure reducing valves
Assist with site excavation and setting of a trench box for cave-in protection, then cut out defective piping and weld in new
Design new steel piping for proper rise and pitch to ensure proper operation
Design and construct a steel air balancing chamber and cutting, welding and threading of piping
Utilize proper storage, handling, and disposal and/or recycling of chemicals and wastes associated with their trades
Identify safety hazards associated with confined spaces
Install new complete run of copper piping
Replace broken underground domestic and chilled water lines up to 8" inches in diameter
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Pipefitter WG-4204-10, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, you must have the ability to do the work of a Pipefitter without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties Related experience includes but is not limited to: perform journeyman level duties to install, repair, remove, modify, align, calibrate, overhaul and perform preventive maintenance on systems and equipment; troubleshoot and analyze defects and malfunctions of high-pressure piping, water, gas, fire suppression, etc.; modify air handler piping to install new steam traps, which incorporate a steam trap monitoring system; cut and weld new steel piping to retrofit the new units; remove existing steam traps and installation of a steam trap/condensate return pump system; and interpret blueprints and sketches.
