This position is in the Facilities Management Service, Engineering Section in the Maintenance and Operations Shop at the Bath VA, of the Finger Lakes VA. The primary purpose of the position involves journeyman painting work in support of activities of Engineering section. Performs maintenance, repairs, applications and installations associated with the painting trade throughout the Medical Center

Duties

Determines the methods and techniques, devices, and materials necessary to do the complete job. Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, hand and machine sanding, pressure washing, wire brushing, dusting, applying paint remover, filling cracks and nail holes, to assure good adhesion. Applies joint taping and joint compound for leveling imperfections, holes and scaling paint areas. Including finishing of new drywall construction. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices, brushes, rollers, spray guns, etc. Ensures that the coating mixtures meet matched texture, decorative thickness, and level requirements. Determine the methods, techniques, materials and devices best suited to obtain smooth-textured and decorative surfaces and ensuring that surface coatings meet level and thickness requirements. Prepares surfaces by any of the accepted methods and techniques and ensures that they meet smoothness, level and shape requirements. Tint, tone, match and blend coating materials, add various agents (for example, retardants, drying agents), and combine coating mixtures to get the proper color, texture, consistency and drying state. Paints indoor and outdoor surfaces such as metal, wood, concrete, plaster, etc. Including gutters, downspout, soffits, eaves railings, fences, picnic tables and benches, bus stops, signs stairwells, windows, hallways, rooms, walls, mechanical equipment, stripes roadways and parking lots to meet prescribed dimensions and layouts. Applies coating materials by any of the accepted methods and devices, check such things as viscosity of coating materials and thickness of coatings on surfaces and ensure that the match, texture, decorative appearance, level and thickness, meet finish requirements. Makes and uses templates as needed. Maintains and keeps all equipment, tools, and areas occupied by the equipment that pertain to his work in an orderly manner. Cuts and installs various types of materials and accomplishes other miscellaneous duties as assigned by his supervisor. Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 08:00 - 4:30p Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD21K26A Physical Requirements: Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, aerial platforms and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets-up materials and equipment that weigh up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds). Occasionally, may handle materials and equipment that weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and over using proper lifting techniques. The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray and fumes are usually present. May be required to prepare and coat surfaces outside in inclement weather. Wear safety shoes. May occasionally be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Understand product SDS's, stay current and use proper SDS safety precautions. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Physical or muscular effort in performing duties includes fatigue producing actions such as painting overhead, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping and working in cramped positions. Must work in an area with unpleasant fumes and thus wear a face mask to prevent injury or illness due to fumes and dust. Ability to wear a respirator. Performs work from ladders and scaffolds.
