About the Position: The Safety and Occupational Health Manager position is located at Madigan Army Medical Center Safety Office, Tacoma, Washington, Work Hours: 0730-1600. Work is usually performed in an office setting. Occasionally, there may be exposure to the risks and hazards of work environments and conditions requiring special safety precautions and clothing. Advanced-in-Hire may be authorized.

Duties

Will conduct safety and occupational health inspections for the medical, dental, and veterinary facilities, which include the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU), Medical Readiness Battalion and administrative, warehouse, and billeting facilities. The incumbent will Plan and establish goals, objectives, and milestones for the Safety and Occupational Health Program. Conduct risk analysis in order to develop abatement recommendations for safety and occupational health hazards. Oversee the regulatory worksite evaluate program, the collection and maintenance of records/accident statistics, safety awards, fire prevention and protection program, hazardous materials program, off-duty safety programs. Train the organization's staff and other supported activities in safety and occupational health requirements and safe work practices Develop or recommend safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. Inspect or survey workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards. Prepare reports of findings and follow up with appropriate staff to assure that hazardous situations have been corrected.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Must complete the CP-12 Level-1 Safety and Occupational Health Professional Certification within 12 Months of Employment.
  • Subject to Shiftwork/nights/weekends/Overtime to support Command mission.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, which includes conducting safety and occupational health inspections in facilities for medical, dental, and veterinary facilities, which include the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU), Medical Readiness Battalion and administrative, warehouse, and billeting facilities. Identifying safety hazards and recommend control measures for hazardous conditions; ensuring safe work environment is preserved at all times; preparing reports of findings and follow up with appropriate staff to assure that hazardous situations have been corrected. Example: Work in occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, and occupational health nurse. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Compliance Inspection and Program ManagementProgram ManagementSafety and HealthSafety and Occupational Health (SOH) Hazard Control Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). Physical Demands: Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching to inspect hospital clinical and support facilities for safety and occupational health hazards, and to ensure construction contractual requirements are met. Climbs ladders infrequently to inspect firewalls, cabling, etc.
