The Electrician serves at the journeymen level for the Station Electric Shop at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC. He/she will report directly to the Supervisory Electrician, with second level supervision from the Maintenance Control Manager.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Reads and comprehends written instructions and safety regulations regarding the performance of job duties; Must maintain a state driver's license for the operation of any assigned vehicle used to transport tools, supplies, materials, and equipment between work sites; Performs preventive maintenance on Emergency Generators, motor controls, life safety devices, and lighting; Inspects electrical components for abnormal wear, check battery levels, fuel level and temperature, run hours, amps, volts, and HZ on each work phase; Operational checks are made prior to and after repairs to any systems to ensure proper pressures, temperatures, alarms, controls and customer satisfaction is achieved; Working knowledge of principles and application or the national Electric Code and associated safety requirements. Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system (Maximo) to provide system control, repair history, analysis and quality of the data entered; Performs layout, setup, test and repair operations on electronic equipment that includes testing all emergency engine generators on a scheduled basis, and recording all pertinent information into a log; Uses circuit theory to understand the operation of individual circuits; Uses soldering irons, wire strippers, hand drills and drill presses, torque wrenches and similar tools of the trade to perform assignments; Uses screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, wire brushes, files, hand drills, and wire strippers; Selects and uses appropriate test equipment to prevent overloading of circuits and damage to delicate parts. Troubleshoots problem areas and inspects for defective components. Loads and tests systems, circuits, equipment and controls to ensure proper and safe operation. Interprets and applies technical information from manufacturer's specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: May handle or carry weights up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces. Exposure to radiation and contaminated or infectious biological hazards may occur. They must also be able to work in the proximity of 120 - 13,800 volt power sources up to eight hours a day.
