Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Operations Support Office, Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate, located in Ashburn, Virginia.

Duties

This is a senior-level, professional position located in the Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate (LSSD) Field Laboratories within the Operations Support Office (OS) of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This position serves as the Laboratory Director of the field laboratory and performs a multiplicity of duties; the planning, management and direction of activities pertinent to the overall management of LSS activities of the CBP field laboratory. This position starts at a salary of $132,368.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $172,075.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $172,075.00 (GS-14 Step 10). Major Duties include: Developing criteria for and installing new and improved laboratory procedures and methodologies; coordinating scientific activities with other governmental agencies and laboratory systems; Developing criteria for and conducting scientific tests and investigations on merchandise and evidence referred to the laboratory; and furnishing scientific and technical advisory services; Initiating, organizing, and managing the development of a comprehensive program to find solutions to novel and complex issues that result from chemical and physical scientific tests; Maintaining currency on national and international scientific and technological developments and advancements in chemistry and forensics science methodology and instrumentation; Performing a full range of supervisory functions for a staff that includes subordinate supervisor

Basic Requirement: A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics plus appropriate experience or additional education. TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED. FAILURE TO PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF CONSIDERATION Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing expert technical advice to higher level managers on chemical and physical testing and forensic analyses; Monitoring and evaluating employee's work products and assigning work to subordinates based on priorities and complexity; Approving leave, interviewing candidates for vacancies and recommending rewards for performance accomplishments.
