Duties

Be a successful applicant. Watch this 5 minute video to learn how to create a federal resume. Works under a trails maintenance leader or other higher-graded position. The position is primarily engaged in assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbling and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs steppingstones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed. May perform other duties such as: Routine painting, carpentry, janitorial, cleaning, trash pickup, grounds keeping, digging, raking, or sweeping. Assisting in transporting camp and work supplies and construction materials. Removal of snow and ice from trails and roads. Area Information: Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (GICL) is located in the Gila Wilderness on the headwaters of the Gila River in southwest New Mexico; 44 miles north of Silver City, NM, 2.5 hours from Deming, NM, 4 hours from El Paso, TX, and 7 hours from Phoenix, AZ. The area has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature ranges from lows in the 20s in the winter to highs in the 90s during the summer months. Government housing may be available. Established in 1907, is the only unit that contains Mogollon sites. The known sites range from Archaic rock shelters through Early and Late Pit House and Classic Pueblo periods. It is divided into two units located in Catron County, in Township 12 South, Range 14 West. The western unit is 480 acres and includes the cliff dwellings. The TJ unit, named for the TJ Ruin, is about one mile farther south at 53 acres. The headquarters building also houses the offices of the Wilderness Ranger District on a 107-acre parcel that was withdrawn as a joint-use admin site under Forest Service jurisdiction.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) position without more than normal supervision. Perform the common work of a maintenance worker, examples include: performing trail construction and maintenance; basic dry stone masonry skills for projects such as water bars, rock steps, retaining walls, etc.; basic log carpentry skills to construct and repair trail bridges and foot logs, replace bridge decks, railings, stringers, and fences. This experience includes the use and operation of hand and power tools used to perform trail work such as rock bar, double jack, jackhammer, plugs and feathers, etc. I take initiative to solve problems and accomplish work assignments in a safe manner. Tasks assigned to me are inspected upon completion by my work leader or supervisor for conformance to requirements. (SCREEN OUT) Technical Practices Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
