About the Position: This position is located in the St. Paul District. The official duty station is the Dredge Goetz, wherever it is located. This position of Marine Oiler is a lead-in to full performance level Striker, Diesel-Electric, XF-4742-09. You maybe non-competitively promoted to the Striker position upon demonstration of ability to perform at that level, possession of U.S. Coast Guard-issued Qualified Man in Engine Department certification, and recommendation of supervisor.

Duties

Maintains engine maintenance, minor repairs, constant checks of oil and water levels, visual, sound and/or testing methods to assure engines are in good running order. Maintains constant watch on pressure and temperature gauges, checks bearings and visually checks pumps for normal operation and minor repairs on pumps. Follows a strict routine in greasing and maintenance of hydraulic and hoisting equipment. Keeps constant watch for bearing heating, clutch and brake adjustments. Makes minor repairs to air cylinders and air controls. Maintains constant watch on generators, bearings, windings, switches and other related items. Checks pressure and water level of heating boiler carrying 15 lbs of steam pressure, repairs leaks in heating lines. Keeps hourly check of compressors, pumps and other related equipment in keeping plants in good operating condition. Required to handle chlorine. Maintains a watch on pressures and temperatures for the fresh water generator aboard the Quarters Barge Taggatz. Maintains watch on oil levels and pressures while in tow. Required to operate Boosters while in use.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by the USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work.
  • Requires travel up to 75%.

Performing common duties such as service, maintain, and repair heavy equipment, tender vessels, towboats, generators, and winches for spud and pipeline anchor barges. In addition to the equipment and vessels the oiler will service and maintain marine sanitation devices, (MSD) and potable water purifiers and pressure systems onboard our manned vessels. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen OutAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble Shooting PHYSICAL DEMAND- Workers at this level expend light to moderate physical effort when climbing around and inspecting machinery, making adjustments, and applying lubricants. Oilers are walking, climbing, or standing almost continuously. They occasionally expend strenuous physical effort such as lifting and moving heavy parts, operating chain hoists and pry bars, sledge hammering, etc., when assisting with repairs. WORKING CONDITIONS- Work is performed mostly inside, where the engine room temperature isusually uncomfortably above normal. Moving machinery subjects incumbent to injury such as cuts,shock, burns, falls on slippery equipment and decks, and drowning. Considerable physical andmental concentration is expended due to running machinery during greasing and oiling andadjusting operations.
