This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) with one vacancy located in Boulder, CO.
Duties
As a Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
As a lead scientist, apply advanced knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of Earth System Sciences to lead the development and testing of regional coupled applications of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Unified Forecast System (UFS).
Develop original research ideas and use a variety of approaches, methods, and procedures to plan and execute assignments, resolving issues/problems that significantly affect the Laboratory scientific programs.
Serve as a subject matter expert in coupled model development designs, and develop, test, and evaluate new applications of the UFS coupled Earth System model, including sea ice prediction in the Arctic and atmospheric river prediction along the west coast of the U.S.
Lead and act as principal contributor to research findings that may be shared at the National and International level meetings and documented in published articles and reports. Participate in forums focused on improving the use of observations of the coupled climate system to improve predictions.
Note: These duties are described at the full performance level of the ZP-4; The ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience OR substitution of education for experience OR combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. To qualify for the 1301 series:
EDUCATION:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
-OR-
B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the ZP-3 or GS-11 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Contributing to the development of coupled Earth System modeling applications.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree.
-OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience as described above.
Note: Only graduate education in excess of one year is qualifying for combination of education and experience.
To qualify at the ZP-4 or GS-13 level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 or GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Designing and developing applications of coupled Earth System models; and
Assessing the performance of coupled Earth System modeling applications and evaluating their potential to improve operational predictions.
Education
Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
