These positions are located in North Cascades National Park, in the Division of Visitor and Resources Protection. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for North Cascades National Park is May but can be variable due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2024

Duties

GS-0025-05: Patrol climbing approaches and technical climbing routes, as well as trailed areas and rugged off-trail travel, by foot and in a wide range of weather conditions. Make educational and safety contacts with visitors, especially mountaineering parties. Initial response and serves on a team for Search and Rescue and emergency response in the wilderness and in technical terrain. Perform some campsite maintenance, trail work, and other tasks relating to wilderness management, including maintenance of composting toilets in climbing areas. Backcountry patrols vary in length from 1 to 10 days per pay period, but average 3-6. The remainder of the time is spent staffing a wilderness information center, SAR and gear cache maintenance, conducting training, and office project work. GS-0025-07: This is a team leader mountaineering ranger position. You are expected to be skilled and experienced to: Provide leadership and guidance to other employees and/or volunteer partners in Search and Rescue operations. Lead climbing and mountaineering patrols. Assist the supervisor in leading and mentoring new rangers. May be responsible for the direction and coordination of volunteers, Student Conservation Association employees, interns, and community work crews doing park projects. May train volunteers, interns, and other employees.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/27/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. This position performs Mountaineering, and experience in ascending to the summit of peaks on Grade IV, Class 5.6 routes with navigation over glaciered terrain, and the ability to lead climbs on glaciered terrain up to 9000' in elevation is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. This experience MUST be documented in application materials. 2. You must possess a current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT), or higher level, certification to be prepared to provide pre-hospital care for medical emergencies by your first day of work. Certification or documentation of enrollment in course MUST be submitted in application materials. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. You must include hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of progressively higher level undergraduate education leading to a bachelor's degree with major study, at least 24 semester hours of related course work, in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) conduct patrols that include mountaineering routes of technical terrain on glaciers or steep rock; 2) staff a visitor center or information desk providing information and orientation to visitors; and 3) respond to all-risk incidents (e.g., medicals, search and rescue, wildland or structural fire, etc.). You must include hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts.
