This position, at the full performance level, is located at the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System, Nursing Service in Geriatrics & Extended Care. The primary purpose of the position is to perform direct resident support work to include individualized exercise regimens for residents, which may include bed exercises, breathing exercises, passive and active range of motion exercises to upper and lower extremities, and initial self-care activities on pre-testing and post procedure activities
Duties
Incumbent can perform all direct patient care tasks in the nursing assistant role in addition to RHT responsibilities, which includes but is not limited to bathing, dressing, bed to chair transfer and vice versa as well as assistance with meals and feeding residents as needed.
Incumbent will organize individual patient exercise regimens duties for regular follow up visits of patients in accordance with the plan of care, which includes, but is not limited to, bed exercises, breathing exercises, passive and active range of motion exercises to upper and lower extremities, bowel and bladder training, dressing and grooming, eating or swallow monitoring in accordance with aspiration precaution orders, providing aromatherapy, healing touch, and other non-pharmacological modalities.
Observe patients' safe use of assistive devices including crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs through verbal and physical guidance and directions.
Provide routine, ongoing documentation of care provided in accordance with care plan and completes a daily summary note to recap patient status throughout the course of treatment, noting if resident goals are met or not.
Teach patients and family members about proper restorative nursing techniques. Utilizes demonstration, return demonstrations, oral presentation and role modeling techniques.Restorative Health Technicians (RHTs) receive requests or instructions for procedures and implement these complex requests or instructions for the provision restorative services and direct patient support.

Physical Requirements: Work is carried out mostly in patient-care areas, two buildings including bedrooms, UA processing rooms, offices, and exterior environments. However, incumbent regularly conducts inspections and supervises building cleanup, etc. Overall duties require occasional lifting, carrying 50+ lbs., sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling/pushing, simple grasping, reaching above shoulder. Conditions may also include heat. cold, excess humidity, work with chemicals, duct, noise, driving a vehicle, fire manipulation. Flexibly, tact. initiative and critical thinking are needed to perform duties with residents within a wide range of diagnostic categories. Must be able to physically defend against physical attacks from residents/patients.
Qualifications
Time-In-Grade Requirement: GS-06 grade level: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held GS-05 any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-06 Experience:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of restorative principles driving direct patient care. Ability to provide assistance of a nursing, restorative, technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the care, Knowledge of and skill in assisting Occupational and Physical Therapy staff in the restoration and maintenance of the individual Veteran's plan (must be in resume). or Possess graduate level education or an internship that meets the specialized experience required above GS-5, only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
