About the Position: Responsible for operation, maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment and systems at assigned installation(s) utilizing voltages up to and including 480 volts.

Duties

Disassembles interlocking navigation and interrelated electrical, mechanical systems, subsystems, standby and related equipment to determine extent of repairs, overhaul and/or replacement parts needed. Makes recommendations when major repairs are needed so that coordinated effort can take place relative to temporary repair, technical engineering review, procurement of replacement items and maintenance of locking or dam control capability. Installs new equipment systems or subsystems to replace faulty or worn items which cannot be effectively repaired or repaired in a timely manner. Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and/or monitoring installation of new and replacement units within the integrated system for telephone and public address systems. Diagnoses, lays out, installs, tests, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, instruments apparatus, and equipment. Conducts regular inspections of electrical equipment, tests and adjusts electrical systems, instrument apparatus and equipment, notes defects and performs preventative maintenance functions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions and its use is mandatory.
  • Incumbent will be required to operate navigational locks for passage of marine surface traffic or dispatch and clear marine surface traffic in or out of narrow shipping channels.
  • A pre-employment physical is required.
  • Subject to call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to analyze cause of malfunctioning electrical items and to expedite repairs.
  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment and random drug testing required.

Often has to climb ladders and poles and use platforms to get to hard- to-reach places to make repairs and installations. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, feet, legs and body in installing, repairing or testing equipment. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside during the day, and at night, as required by emergencies, on high structures over turbulent water with strong currents, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical wires, in cramped quarters, and on scaffolds or slings as required by repairs to be made. Occasionally works behind bulkhead or in tunnel below water level. Is extremely subject to falls, drowning, burns, fatal and nonfatal electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, exposure to moving equipment, machinery, loud noise, inclement weather, and dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vest, protective ear devices, hard hat, hard-toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing.
