The position is at the full performance level located in the Veterans Health Administration, at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VHA), Los Angeles, California located in Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC). Direct resident support work, include individualized exercise regimens for residents, which may include bed and breathing exercises, passive, active range of motion exercises to upper and lower extremities, initial self-care activities on pre-testing and post procedure activities.
Duties
Duties include, but not limited to:
Provide routine, ongoing documentation of care provided in accordance with care plan and completes a monthly summary note to recap resident status throughout the course of treatment, noting if resident goals are met or not
Complete documentation related to activity tolerance, deterioration or improvement of performance and any pertinent changes during the course of intervention.
Document and record all significant and pertinent information and observations including current health status, and/or subtle changes in the resident's bio-psychosocial status with actions taken.
Restorative Health Technicians (RHTs) receive requests or instructions for procedures and implement these complex requests or instructions for the provision restorative services and direct resident support.
Receive instructions for a variety of services involving physical, kinesiotherapy, occupational therapies as well as nursing care practice procedures.
Follow designated charting technique to post to residents' charts that provides a daily outline or summary of the resident's care.
Incumbent can perform all direct resident care tasks in the nursing assistant role in addition to RHT responsibilities, which includes but is not limited to bathing, dressing, bed to chair transfer and vice versa as well as assistance with meals and feeding residents as needed.
Incumbent provides instruction to residents and family members about proper restorative nursing techniques to enhance independence in function and to maintain resident's self-performance of care.
Secure resident confidence and cooperation for therapy by explaining procedures, instructing residents on care goals and intent for therapy.
Provide care to residents experiencing reconditioning or learning needs in relationship to functional Activities of Daily Living.
Monitor for changes in resident behavior, attitude, physical complaints, or appearance; reports resident changes to the charge nurse or provider.
Recognize emergency situations, responds quickly and appropriately, and intervenes while awaiting assistance.

Physical Requirements: The work performed requires regular and recurring periods of prolonged walking throughout the medical center. It also requires regular and recurring physical exertion assisting patients onto procedure tables, assisting patients in and out of wheelchairs, positioning patients, standing for prolonged periods, reaching, bending and lifting light loads.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: developing and maintaining a therapeutic, beneficial and helpful relationship with residents admitted to the domiciliary; Provides initial crisis intervention in situations of an emergent medical, psychiatric and/or behavioral Nature; Performs regular administrative functions, e.g. processes residents for clearance, completes entries in communication log, completes progress notes (must show in resume). OR,
Education: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR,
Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Examples are listed below:(a) Six months of experience in the health care field and three months of graduate education in health care related courses such as, biological science, surgical technician courses, nursing assistant or other courses related to the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
