This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
The Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the CT Imaging S.ection within the Department of Radiology at Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. He/she is a working supervisor with daily CT duties. Incumbent works closely with the technologists, radiologists, c;linicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction. Incumbent requires specific knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy and its application in CT to include but not limited to General CT exams, 3-D reconstruction scans, CT interventional procedures (drainages, biopsies, ablations), Neuroradiology interventional procedures (SNRBs, Facet Injections, ablations) and Cardiac related exams.
Duties include but not limited to
First-line supervisor with all duties associated with the CT section, i.e. performance evaluations, time off approvals, competencies, etc. The CT supervisor will be the direct/ first line supervisor for GS-10 CT Technologists at V AMC Charleston and CBOCs. Works with the Chief Radiologist or assigned radiologists to make protocol changes to ensure optimal imaging is obtained.
Takes appropriate disciplinary actions with guidance thru the Chief Technologist, Administrative Officer, Chief Radiology, VA directives and NAGE involvement as deemed necessary and proposes to higher authority a specific disciplinary action based on the problem and facts, (e.g. counseling, suspension, demotions, letters of warning, removal, etc.). Makes formal requests and recommendations for promotions, reassignments, quality increases, and other performance awards.
Participates with the Chief Technologist in setting performance standards, goals and objectives of assigned or supervised employees.
Technologist Staff Scheduling: Develops and maintains on-call schedules where required for CT technologists. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules.
Reports absences and/or tardiness to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Recommends the reassignment of techs if necessary, due to call-ins, or increased/decreased workload. Co-ordinates leave request i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing.
Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies for CT are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times, with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies.
Quality Control: Coordinates and supervises daily quality assurance activities of all CT scanners. Works closely with the Quality Management Radiology Staff to ensure that documentation and information for the Joint Commission, Office of inspector General, SOARS, etc. is properly maintained and readily available for inspection.
Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair and installation of CT scan systems, injector systems and POC equipment for lab. Serves as the liaison between CT and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors.
Works closely with the Chief Technologist, physics contractors and the Radiation Safety Officer to evaluate CT protocols with regards to dose management, dose documentation and radiation safety practices in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.
Continually reviews new developments in the field of CT. Is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available. The purpose of this review is to provide patients with the best possible scans for diagnostic purposes.
Keeps communication lines open to ensure that the local, VISN, and VA goals, and objectives are passed on to employees. Keeps management informed of employee concerns.
Maintains appropriate records and files of exams performed on patients.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS 11:Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS - 10) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a supervisory radiologic technologist.
Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The incumbent is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.
Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:
Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage section workload, quality, performance, and productivity.
Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, Ultrasound).
Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions.
Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees.

Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting , 45 pounds and over, prolonged standing, repeated bending, transferring. stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling with and without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other. Reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required). Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; distinguish basic colors; good hearing (aid permitted); good vision; speed in working and emotional stability. Must have the ability to Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Lead Apron) for periods of time. A health examination must be successfully complete prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Employee Health Clinic policy.
