The incumbent is an integral part of a large comprehensive Occupational Therapy (OT) Service at the Minneapolis VAMC. This is a Complexity Level 1a facility with a National Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC), a Spinal Cord Injury and Neurological Disease Center (SCI/D), an Amputation Regional Center (ARC), a Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation (PTRP) program and a Polytrauma Network Site (PNS). This is a 1.0 FTEE position assigned to the Advanced wheelchair seating and mobility clinic.
Duties
The incumbent applies knowledge in assistive technology/advanced wheeled mobility in conjunction with knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy theory, practice skills, and techniques, inclusive of cognition, psychological sequelae, physical and environmental contexts, and implications of medical conditions on daily function. Recommendations and issuance of equipment is based on clinical expertise considering the needs of the veteran and caregiver, improving independence, safety, and access to the community. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert in assistive technology, specifically wheeled mobility devices and patient lifts.
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across multiple areas of practice.
Ability to provide clinical guidance in the advanced practice area to other OT practitioners.
Knowledge of advanced specialized evaluation, interventions, and services to independently develop treatment strategies for area of specialization.
Skill in developing protocols and procedures for intervention programs based on current occupational therapy theory, recent research, and practice.
Ability to provide consultation to other health care practitioners and outside groups about occupational therapy scope of practice for area of specialization.
Ability to implement, revise/update evidence based occupational therapy services and programming in area of specialization.
Seeks out information regarding populations served and utilizes information in evaluation and treatment of patients.
Incorporates the occupational profile for the OT treatment of patients across multiple ages and diagnoses.
Incorporates clinical practice guidelines and function-based activities to advance assistive technology, specifically seating and positioning knowledge and skills.
Interprets and incorporates current research and practice standards to inform evidence based practice with specific focus in seating and positioning.
Independently selects and administers standardized and non-standardized assessments including a wide range of psychosocial, cognitive, and physical assessments appropriate for patient population.
Documents comprehensive evaluations, progress, and discharge of patient's physical, occupational, cognitive, and psychosocial functional deficits to inform and develop appropriate OT treatment plans and discharge recommendations.
Independently makes changes in treatment plans, methods and modalities based on patient response to treatment, communication with treatment team members, feedback from family members and the patient's goals.
Demonstrates skill in organizing and developing protocols and procedures. Develops policy, procedures, standards, and programming for wheelchair seating and mobility.
Works with planning committees and groups addressing continuum of care issues, and preparation for quality surveys such as Joint commission on Accreditation and CARF.
Collaborates with specialists in secondary coverage areas to monitor changes to interventions if complexity increases.
Effectively and respectfully communicates in all interactions, specifically with patients, caregivers, team members and other professionals in a timely manner across various platforms.
Actively collaborates with other team members to create appropriate treatment plans and goals for patients.
Routinely communicates discharge recommendations to team and family members or other stakeholders.
Demonstrate ability to set multiple priorities, meet multiple deadlines, make effective use of time and demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to maximize productivity while continuing to meet patient priority for care and treatment.
Utilizes knowledge of adaptive equipment and environmental adaptations with all patients seen; seeks out additional options for patients as needed.
Consults and collaborates with other specialists within the department/facility as needed for complex equipment or modifications to meet a specific patient's needs as appropriate.
Performs duties with minimal oversight of supervisor.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
b. Education
(1)The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below:
(a) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist;
NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy.
or
(b) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field
NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that ACOTE would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy.
or
(c) Master's Degree or higher in occupational therapy.
(2) Individuals must be a graduate of a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the ACOTE or predecessor organizations. This is inclusive of an internship (supervised fieldwork experience required by the educational institution). ACOTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
c. Certification. Candidates must possess a current NBCOT certification as an OT.
d. State Licensure. Candidates must possess a full, current, and unrestricted state license, to practice occupational therapy in a state, territory or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations
Occupational Therapist (Clinical Specialist), GS-13
(1) Education, Experience, and Licensure. Completion of one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level and directly related to the position being filled and one of the following:
(a) A minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice directly in the advanced practice area. This time must be within the past five years;
(b) Certification in an area recognized by the AOTA;
(c) Completion of a fellowship/residency or advanced degree program in the advanced practice area; or
(d) An additional advanced degree in a related field.
(2) Demonstrated KSAs. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across multiple areas of practice.
(b) Ability to provide clinical guidance in the advanced practice area to other OT practitioners.
(c) Knowledge of advanced specialized evaluation, interventions and services to independently develop treatment strategies for area of specialization.
(d) Skill in developing protocols and procedures for intervention programs based on current occupational therapy theory, recent research, and practice. (e) Ability to provide consultation to other health care practitioners and outside groups about occupational therapy scope of practice for area of specialization.
(f) Ability to implement, revise/update evidence based occupational therapy services and programming in area of specialization.
