This position is located in the Emergency Department with Crownpoint Service Unit in Crownpoint, NM. The purpose of the position is to provide support work to medical staff. The incumbent may be assigned for varying periods of time into one or more types of responsibilities within medical support assistance work where the individual's skills are required.
Duties
Performs a variety of receptionist duties such as receives patients, visitors, and telephone calls; refers calls to appropriate staff; escorts patients into treatment areas, as needed; refers emergencies and walk-ins for treatment; answers routine medical, personnel, and administrative inquiries; and confirms eligibility; maintains patient logs
Retrieves and files medical records; transcribes health care provider's orders and medical data; completes and routes requests for patient activities and treatment procedures.
Performs a full range of miscellaneous support duties such as receives and distributes official mail. Escorts patients, when. necessary
Interviews patients to obtain necessary information for registration, to include demographic and insurance information and authorization so that the Business Office can bill appropriate alternative resources for health care services provided, including non-beneficiary services.
Prior to examination or treatment in the clinic, identifies those patients whose health benefits coverage requires prior approval and determines the extent of their health care coverage; searches in the patients' health records and in the automated patient registration system to obtain and verify eligibility for Medicaid, Medicare, and/or private or commercial insurance.
Initiates the necessary admission forms and enters current patients' data, to include input into the Patient Registration System
Verifies patients' eligibility for Medicaid using State Medical Assistance System.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
One (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level.
OR 4 years of education above high school.
OR A combination of both education and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples include: Scheduling patient appointments, retrieving patient charts, printing Health Summaries, stamping patient care encounter forms and appropriate charge tickets, and delivering to appropriate staff. Performs clerical duties related to patient referrals, admissions, and discharges and routes patient records according to established protocols. Keeps patients records in order with all forms properly identified. Maintains record confidentiality and safeguards medical information. Able to assess the patients need for urgent and emergent appointments with appropriate provider and clinic.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
