Job opening: Cartographic Technician

Salary: $22 - 29 per hour
Published at: Dec 12 2023
Employment Type: Multiple Schedules
This position is located in Yosemite National Park, in the Physical Sciences & Landscape Ecology Branch. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Yosemite National Park is May-June but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Open to the first 50 applicants. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 EST on the 'applicant cut-off' date (which may be sooner than 12/19/2023) to be considered.

Duties

This position is located in Yosemite National Park at the El Portal location. The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of tasks involved in the development of cartographic products including but not limited to field data collection, compilation, editing, and map production (web or digital); Global Positioning System (GPS); and Geographic Information System (GIS) technical support functions. Technician work is typically associated with and supportive of a professional field; work may involve substantial elements of the work of the professional field but requires less than full knowledge of the field involved. This position is intended to report to a specialist or resources manager in the same or a related field. If the incumbent is not supervised by a professional specialist in a related profession, then technical direction must be obtained from a specialist in a central office or center. The position is distinguished from similar positions at the GS-06 level in the following ways: assignments require that the incumbent have greater knowledge, experience and judgement in order to complete a variety of conventional projects of relatively limited scope; independently resolve problems for which precedents exist; select, from several alternatives, the most appropriate course of action for planning executing work; and apply a wide range of conventional methods and solutions to new situations. As a result, the position has a broader scope and effect; unlike lower graded positions, this position directly affects the design, content, resolution and accuracy of cartographic products and/or the design, operation and adequacy of GIS activities. Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.
