This position is located at Kayenta Service Unit, Inscription House Health Center, Division of Nursing Services, Inscription House, Arizona. Incumbent works under the Supervisory Nurse.
Duties
The purpose of this position is to provide initial patient screening, registration, and administrative services by assisting with direct patient care that involves specialized medical procedures of a routing nature according to established clinical protocol.
Incumbent is alert to safety and infection control issues and reports any incidents to the Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) and/or the Supervisory Nurse
Responds to emergencies in an appropriate manner
Assist with direct patient care procedures and related tasks by checking in patients; obtaining patient histories; taking vital signs of temperature, height, weight, blood pressure, respirations, and O2 saturations; preparing charts; preparing for medical examinations; and seating/placing patients in patient room
Works with healthcare providers such as medical providers in the outpatient clinics
Performs routing specialized procedures of venipuncture, injections (immunizations, antibiotics, or Depo Provera), and intravenous cannulation to collect specimen, electrocardiograms and sterile dressing changes
Provides care to assigned patients under the direction of the LIP and department head nurse in accordance with established policy
Assists with sterile procedures of sutures, spinal taps, pelvic exams and physical exams and clean procedures of cast application as requested by the physician
Monitors and reports patients to medical provider, nurse, charge nurse, or supervisor
Educates, advises, and documents specific patient medical issues
Assists with patient admission and/or transports by preparing and patient health summaries, transport orders, etc., as needed
Assists and escorts stable patients requiring minimal care via ground to other facilities
Adheres to and practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods and standards
Maintains a courteous and a professional manner and appearance with internal and external customer
Participates in the maintenance of clinical records
Arranges clinic appointments for patients within Indian Health Service and Contract facilities
Assists with patient discharge and transfer transportation
Cleans, arranges, and restocks supply cabinets
Complies with laboratory requirements
Obtains a sterile in & out catheterized urine specimen and bacteriologic specimen
Sets up for oxygen administration and assists LIP with oxygen administration device
Maintains and assists with patient referrals
Obtains results of labs, tests, scans, and discharge summaries done in outside facilities' medical records or forms on disease registry patients
Participates in committees and meetings
Participates in performance improvement projects as assigned
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above the GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
Specialized experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
GS-05: 1 year of Specialized experience at least to the next lower grade level.
Specialized experience: Taking patient vital signs, taking medical histories, preparing patients for medical tests and examinations, assisting physicians during examinations, explaining medical procedures to patients, sterilizing medical instruments, perform general office duties, operate patient care equipment, administer breathing treatments and immunizations, and experience with referral processing and durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and medical supplies orders.
GS-6: 1 year of specialized experience at least next lower grade level.
Specialized experience: Assess and monitor patient's conditions and reports changes to professional staff, assist in the moving, transferring and lifting of patients, assist physician with diagnostic procedures i.e., lumbar punctures, aspiration procedures, administration of oxygen, etc. Prepares exam rooms including setting up specialized trays. Performs waived testing, specimen collection, venipuncture, etc. Experienced in electronic health documentation, familiar with first responder procedures.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
