This position is located in Mount Rainier National Park, in the Natural and Cultural Resources Division.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Mount Rainier National Park is March-April, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024.

Duties
Crew members will perform the following activities: Carry out a scientific monitoring program for Northern Spotted Owl occupancy, survival, reproduction and recruitment at Mount Rainier National Park. Crew members will hike to established sites to deploy autonomous recording units (ARUs) and known owl territories and then search for spotted owls throughout that territory, usually off trail and in strenuous terrain during inclement weather. Crew members will also collect data on owl habitat and other wildlife species encountered.
Crew members must be skilled in animal and plant identification. The field work will occur in various parts of Mount Rainier National Park, the majority of which occurs off trail in Park wilderness, using established protocols and standard equipment. Crew members will occasionally be required to safely capture, handle, mark, and gather biological data from free ranging species. Gather, collate, and enter scientific data into a computer using access and other databases, and assist in analyzing, mapping, and preparing written progress reports.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife-Owls) GS-05: Employees assigned to the wildlife research, inventory, and monitoring project for Northern Spotted Owl will work throughout the forested areas in Mount Rainier National Park, from 2000' to up to 4800' in elevation. This is primarily a field job, with approximately 80% being strenuous outdoor activity and 20% sedentary office work.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife-Owls) GS-06: These positions will be field team leaders assigned specifically to the Northern Spotted Owl Monitoring Program. Selected candidates will perform all of the duties of lower graded positions plus assist with the management of the field component of the project. Pending funding, leads will also conduct wildlife surveys for additional projects.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife-Owls) GS-07: These positions will be field crew leaders for the Northern Spotted Owl Monitoring project. Selected candidates will perform the duties of lower graded positions plus will work closely with the park Wildlife Ecologist to manage the field component of the project to which they are assigned. Selected candidates serve in a lead role for organizing logistics, field data collection, quality control, data entry into an MS Access database, data processing, data summaries and handling administrative processes for their assigned crew(s).
Mount Rainier National Park is located approximately 2 hours south of Seattle, near the community of Ashford. It is included within the Seattle/Tacoma locality pay area. Government housing may be available; however, a full range of living options are available within commuting distance, from rural to small town to suburban. All services and amenities are available in nearby communities. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound: hiking, climbing, canoeing and kayaking, biking, and fishing among others. The climate is considered moderate, but frequently overcast and rainy at lower elevations during fall, winter and spring. Longmire often experiences snowfall from November-May. Summers are normally sunny and pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from the low 70's to low 80's and low humidity. Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than 12/15/2023).
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position must possess the experience and ability to backpack and camp for at least 6 consecutive days, carrying up to 50 pounds of gear in mountainous terrain and traveling up to 15 miles per day. Trips may be work related or may be for recreation. Must be notated in resume.

To qualify at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing research and monitoring activities for wildlife resources (specifically Northern Spotted Owls), safely capturing and banding/tagging wildlife, safely traveling and orienteering in wilderness settings, and accurately collecting and recording biological data in a field setting. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics which included at least 6 semester hours directly related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts.
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing research and monitoring activities for wildlife resources (specifically Northern Spotted Owls), safely capturing and banding/tagging wildlife, safely traveling and orienteering in wilderness settings, accurately collecting and recording biological data in a field setting, retrieving, analyzing and reporting biological data for reports, and operate and maintain resource management equipment in the field. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion at least one year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a directly related field such as wildlife management, biology, ornithology, zoology, or ecology. You must include transcripts.

To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a directly related graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent).
