This announcement is for one Pipefitter at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, located in Tampa, Florida. The incumbent serves as a Pipefitter in an extremely complex medical facility, which is constantly evolving within a highly complex and competitive geographic area.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Apply accepted steam fitting and pipefitting trade methods and techniques. Conduct preventive maintenance activities on steam fitting and plumbing equipment throughout a health care facility. Repair various types of thermostatically controlled equipment and valves as well as steam and water mixing valves on all types of equipment. Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints. Utilize shop mathematics and lay out such things as angles, arcs, and circles. Maintain and repair steam distribution and heating systems. Plan and layout the installation and modification of various systems and equipment. Carry out the routing, openings, slant and level of water lines and the location and arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment. Adjust and install heating, ventilating and refrigerating systems. Conduct repairs and installations by use of ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard- to reach places. Operate, maintain and repair water, sewage and storm drainage systems, welding and sheet metal work. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Pipefitter must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas, and using arm and back muscles in tightening connections. He/she must have the ability to be on feet for long periods either standing, walking, working on ladders, or staging materials, and lift equipment weighing 50 pounds and over. Will request assistance when needed to avoid injury.: The Pipefitter may also make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the Pipefitter to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Pipefitters frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, they may lift and carry items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).The Pipefitter will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools, clothing, etc., to protect him/herself, other staff, visitors, and patients. Other assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basements, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads, and walkways. Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, wet, and cramped locations. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases, and acids. Subject to burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches, and molten solder. Possibilities of falls exist due to work in high places. Subject to infections from unsanitary working areas such as sewers, water traps and lines. Assists in other crafts of the Pipe and Metal Unit as required. The Pipefitter must always be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. He/she must observe all local and National Safety Codes. The Pipefitter must know and comply with all the safety factors of the trade to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel. Must wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands, and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos contamination.
