We expect to fill 1 vacancy at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not-to-exceed 13 months with possible extension up 4 years without re-announcement.

Duties

Operate, maintain, and inventory weed management equipment. Mix, maintain, and calibrate herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments. Inventory, monitor, and map existing weed populations utilizing global positioning systems and topographic maps. Conduct rangeland rehabilitation and restoration projects. Prepare reports based on environmental assessments. Work with landowners and cooperators within the geographic area to ensure weed management efforts are successful. May operate 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, and small farm tractors.

Qualifications

This position has a specialized experience requirement. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following specialized experience will be rated not qualified: Work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing. Range research activities. Work in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range. Range or forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work. -OR- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major in: Forestry Range Management Agriculture Or a subject-matter field directly related to the position. -OR- A combination of specialized experience and education with at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable). In addition to meeting the above requirement, and in order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-08: One year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-7 level. Examples of specialized experience may include: independently performing all aspects of treating weeds with minimal supervision; serving as a crew lead or team member. Accurately documenting pesticide use; prepare reports such as Pesticide Use Reports, Integrated Weed Management Reports, Environmental Assessments, and Pesticide Application Records. Conducting mapping, weed monitoring, and weed management planning. Operate and maintain weed treatment equipment and supplies such as UTV's, Herbicide sprayers, hand tools, chainsaws, and herbicides. -OR- Only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field (directly related to the position) meets the requirements for GS-8. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience that includes at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 Months. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year probationary or two year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common.
