About the Position: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) Facilities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Operate a variety of sandblasting equipment to clean metallic and non-metallic surfaces. Prepare, load, operate, make minor adjustments, and replenish abrasive supply of assigned sandblasting equipment and hand sanders. Provide the most effective cleaning techniques to items and surfaces. Regulate blasting duration and distance of hand-held nozzle from surfaces to avoid warping and to provide the most effective cleaning technique. Perform routine minor maintenance procedures. Works from oral or written orders.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Sandblaster ~ without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes: 1) Operating of abrasive blasting equipment; 2) Familiarity with cleaning characteristics of common type metals and alloys with standard abrasive agents such as metal grit, metal shot, see, glass bead, etc.; 3) Applying proficiency to prepare, load, operate, make minor adjustments, and replenish abrasive supply of assigned sandblasting equipment in order to assure a thorough cleaning of items or surfaces; 4) Regulating blasting duration and distance of hand-held nozzle from surface to avoid warping; 5) Providing the most effective cleaning techniquest. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT Work assignments involve standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling, and crouching in strained and awkward positions for prolonged periods to blast interior and exterior surfaces. Many of the larger items to be blasted require blasting positions on surfaces where effective positioning of the blasting nozzle/hose are physically difficult to maintain. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 75 pounds, and may be required to manipulate objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Electric lifts, cranes, or other workers are available to assist with extremely heavy items. Required to control hand-held blasting hose with nozzle subject to extremely high pressure (e.g., in excess of 100 psi). WORKING CONDITIONS Sandblast chamber work exposes incumbent to the possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and broken bones. Also exposed to constant noise, dust, flying abrasives, rust, scale, paint chips, etc. Required to wear an air-fed hood, heavy protective clothing, gloves, ear protection, and safety shoes.
