About the Position: Lead Security Guard with the Department of Emergency Services, Physical Security Division at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington

Duties

Shift Leader who is an assistant to the Guard Shift Supervisor. Make daily assignments to ensure that guard coverage is provided to assigned patrol areas. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures. Independently performs, with little or no supervision, installation access control for pedestrians and vehicles utilizing standard operating procedures, written orders. At increased Force Protection Condition (FPCON) may be required to conduct foot or vehicle patrols of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as storage, administrative and other structures as designated. Perform Visitor Control Center (VCC) duties. Implement the installation closure plan securing ACPs at heightened FPCONs, emergencies or disasters and then becomes a part of the installation response capability.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility at the Secret level using a Tier 3 background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the NCIC terminals.
  • This position is a drug testing position.
  • Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • Incumbent must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • Must be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and first aid.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • Incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform IAW AR 190-56, maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • Employee must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • This position is covered under the LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT: Must meet the requirements under the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Access Control OperationsComputer LiteracyOral CommunicationPhysical Security Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06). One year of specialized experience which includes: demonstrated experience performing guard activities and security functions: 1) Enforcing access control for pedestrians or vehicles following standard operating security procedures; 2) safeguarding personnel, information and critical assets against unlawful entry, sabotage, theft or willful damage; AND 3) using an automated system, such as a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) workstation terminal, to perform queries to screen visitors and personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
