This position is with the Tongass National Forest and is duty stationed in Juneklu, Alaska.
This professional position has responsibility for planning, administering and providing professional expertise in minerals and geology programs.

Duties
Responsibilities are at full performance level, GS-11.
Determine the impacts of prospecting, exploration, development, and mining on public lands through the application of geologic principles.
Duties listed below are at the full performance level.
Investigate and determine the geologic limitations and capacities of projects in a specific geographical area.
Maintain communication with other forest service personnel, federal and state agencies, permittees, applicants and special interest groups to provide technical advice and coordinate minerals operations.
Provide recommendations regarding the existence of minerals on public lands.
Conduct geologic studies and investigations to determine the effect mineral activities have on land resources.
Work with operators not in compliance with Plans of Operations to reach an environmentally sound solution to logistical mining problems and take appropriate action.
Work closely with miners on all phases of logical mineral operations in order to prepare necessary environmental documentation for these projects.
Requirements

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.-OR-Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service defined as two or more of the following:
Collected, analyzed, and reviewed soil and rock sample data and reported findings in response to a geologic inquiry or as a result of reviewing a geologic map or report;
Assisted with administering mineral locatable & saleable activities and provided standard data to higher level specialists;
Assisted with inspecting mineral operations for compliance and resource impacts; OR
Conducted studies or investigations on projects where minerals and geology activities had an effect on development and/or management of forest resources.
-OR-
Successful completion of2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a geological program of study obtained in an accredited college or university.
-OR-
A combination of graduate-level education(beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 18 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.) obtained.in an accredited college or university plus specialized experience that together meets the qualification requirements for this position.
For the GS-11: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service defined as all of the following:
Conducted geological studies and investigations on a variety of projects where geology and mineral activities had an effect on development and/or management of forest resources;
Applied geologic principles to methods of prospecting, exploration, development, and mining, including investigating and determining the geologic limitations and capacities of projects in a specific geographical area; and/or
Developed and analyzed data and prepared reports related to the responsiveness of implementation plans for environmental protection programs, including reviewing and coordinating the preparation of comments on complex environmental impact statements.

Completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a geological program of study obtained in an accredited college or university.
-OR-
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.) obtained in an accredited college or university.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
