This position serves as a Park Ranger in Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) in any organizational unit within the National Park Service. The primary purpose of this uniformed position is to perform a variety of one-grade interval park ranger duties associated with preventing search and rescue incidents from occurring in park units managed by the National Park Service (NPS).
Duties
Serve as a member of a highly functioning team of Rangers alongside fellow General Rangers, Protection Rangers, other park staff, personnel from cooperating agencies, and volunteers. Use computers to communicate electronically; use radios to communicate on a daily basis. Conduct patrols throughout the park's backcountry trail network via foot and throughout the park's front country and fire roads via motor vehicle. Educate Park visitors about a variety of subjects, including recreational opportunities, natural and cultural history of the park and its resources, hazards and how to avoid them, backcountry safety, preparedness, safe hiking, and what to do in the case of an emergency while on patrol and while staged at busy trailheads. Deliver Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) messaging to visitors. Communicate in-person via impromptu contacts, as well as via informal and semi-formal presentations. Respond to emergency medical calls as an EMT, such as motor vehicle crashes, litter carryout rescues, helicopter rescues; drive the park ambulance (if trained); conduct hasty ground search operations; conduct visitor assists, such as lockouts, jump starts, and courtesy transports. Assist with managing Division equipment, such as rescue gear, medical supplies, office equipment, etc.; and facilities to include an ambulance bay, equipment caches, the park ambulance, and patrol vehicles.
It is anticipated that one position will be filled at the GS-07 level and up to five positions will be filled at the GS-05 level.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience must have demonstrated your knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience may have been in law enforcement, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: law enforcement or investigative work; resource protection related to natural and cultural resources; emergency services (emergency medical, search and rescue, emergency dispatch); forestry and/or fire management (wildland and/or structural); assist in the management, information dissemination, or the carrying out of programs in a park, conservation reserve or similar area (entrance station, backcountry office, volunteer, visitor information desk, campground ranger).

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with major study or at least 24 semester hours of course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. (NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1year of specialized experience.) For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the education requirement) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified above (50% of the related coursework required). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
