These positions are located in Olympic National Park, in the Natural and Cultural Resource Management Division. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Olympic National Park is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024. Open to the first 125 applicants or until 12/15/2023 whichever comes first. Duties

Major Duties: Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) - Owls GS-05: Employees assigned to the wildlife monitoring project for Northern Spotted Owl will work throughout the forested areas in Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. This is primarily a field job, with approximately 80% being strenuous outdoor activity and 20% sedentary office work. Crew members will perform the following activities: Carry out a scientific monitoring program for the Northern Spotted Owl using programmable acoustic recorders. Crew members will hike to established sample sites to install and retrieve acoustic recorders using established protocols. Crew members may also be required to collect data on owl habitat and other wildlife species encountered and perform other wildlife related duties as assigned. Much of the work requires overnight travel in the backcountry up to 30 miles from a trailhead carrying personal and project equipment in packs weighing up to 50 pounds. All sites are off trail and applicants are expected to be capable of safely navigating in steep terrain, a variety of forest conditions, snow, and often inclement weather. Crew members will occasionally be required to perform spotted owl surveys. Candidates should be able to identify spotted and barred owls, keep organized field notes, collect, and enter scientific data, and assist in field planning, site mapping, and preparing written reports. Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) - Owls GS-06: These positions will be field team leaders assigned specifically to the Northern Spotted Owl Demographic Monitoring Program. Selected candidates will perform all of the duties of lower graded positions plus assist with the management of the field component of the project. Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) - Owls GS-07: These positions will be field crew leaders for the Northern Spotted Owl Monitoring project. Selected candidates will perform the duties of lower graded positions plus will work closely with the project coordinator to manage the field component of the project to which they are assigned. Selected candidates serve in a lead role for organizing logistics, field data collection, quality control, data management, data summaries and handling administrative processes for their assigned crew(s).

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 12/15/2023). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR: Qualified applicants must possess the experience and ability to backpack and camp for at least 6 consecutive days, carrying up to 50 pounds of gear in mountainous terrain and traveling up to 15 miles per day. Trips may be work related or may be for recreation. NOTE: You must describe your backpacking and wilderness camping experiences in your resume. - AND - To qualify at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing research and monitoring activities for wildlife resources (specifically Northern Spotted Owls), safely capturing and banding/tagging wildlife, safely traveling and orienteering in wilderness settings, and accurately collecting and recording biological data in a field setting. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics which included at least 6 semester hours directly related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. To qualify at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing research and monitoring activities for wildlife resources (specifically Northern Spotted Owls), safely capturing and banding/tagging wildlife, safely traveling and orienteering in wilderness settings, accurately collecting and recording biological data in a field setting, retrieving, analyzing and reporting biological data for reports, and operate and maintain resource management equipment in the field. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion at least one year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a directly related field such as wildlife management, biology, ornithology, zoology, or ecology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a directly related graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts. To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion at least one year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a directly related field such as wildlife management, biology, ornithology, zoology, or ecology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above.
