This position is located in the Air Traffic Organization, Safety and Technical Training, Policy & Performance Directorate (AJI-3). This Directorate collects safety data, tracks and monitors safety performance, analyzes risk for emerging trends, and evaluates emerging entrants, such as commercial space operations and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), for safe integration into the NAS.
Duties
This position is a Mathematician responsible for analyzing data, applying computational techniques, and identifying trends and relationships within the data to solve problems. Develops mathematical models and associated computation methods to conduct quantitative risk assessments of new systems/capabilities prior to deployment. Performs multiple, varying and complex assignments under the minimal direction of the team manager, project/program manager, or more experienced technical specialist. This work significantly affects the safety of the National Airspace System (NAS) and the accomplishment of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
strategic objectives.

Qualifications
IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS, applicants must demonstrate at least one year (52 weeks) of SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE equivalent to the next lower grade/pay band (FG/GS-13/FV-I) that is typically related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at least equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as:Experience analyzing data, applying computational techniques, and identifying trends and relationships within the data to solve problems.; andExperience applying mathematics, statistics and Bayesian methods to analyze and assess aviation safety risk hazards.You should include relevant examples of the specialized experience in your work history. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Degree: Mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics; or combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics) plus appropriate experience or additional education.
(The total course work must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.)
