The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership, management of workflow and technical guidance to pharmacy technicians and contact representatives assigned to the Meds by Mail Call Center. The Lead Pharmacy Technician work is technical in nature and requires administrative support to the Meds by Mail call center.
Duties
This position serves as a Lead Pharmacy Technician for the Meds by Mail Call Center in Cheyenne, WY. As a Lead Pharmacy Technician, you will serve as a technical advisor for operating specialized equipment in the call center. You will also assist in implementation of VA inbound e-Prescribing (eRx). As a Lead Pharmacy Technician you must also perform pharmacy related calculations associated with interpreting the inbound eRx.
Major Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Uses leadership skills to provide technical advice and constructive feedback to team members.
Orients and trains team members on specialized equipment used in the Call Center such as the OPEX scanner.
Conducts competency assessments to validate team members' knowledge and skills, offering coaching, mentoring and training as needed.
Monitors DAPER and eRx deficiency queues and reviews completed work for accuracy and timeliness.
Monitors recorded, and/or live customer calls handled by Call Center staff to identify training issues. Communicates repeated practice deviations to appropriate supervisory personnel for corrective actions.
Coordinates and assigns work activities of team members within the limits of available resources, based on pending workload and established priorities.
Maintains a comprehensive phone schedule, reassigning work throughout the day as needed.
Monitors phone queues for spikes and staff adherence to assigned schedules.
Recommends changes in tours of duty as needed to meet anticipated workload.
Handles escalated calls when Call Center staff are unsuccessful at resolving the caller's issue.
Uses independent judgments to resolve operational issues. Communicates unresolved operational issues to supervisory personnel.
Promotes Organizational Health by evaluating and analyzing workflow effectiveness. Executes workflow changes in support of engaged, collaborative teams working in an integrated environment providing consistent, high quality prescription services.
Promotes an environment of high reliability by providing excellent customer service and supporting a just culture.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:45 am - 4:15 pm MST
Telework: May be available based on the needs of the service and will be discussed during interviews.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Proficient in spoken and written English.
To be eligible for a GS-0661-07 Lead Pharmacy Technician, applicants must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
OR
National Health career Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
Grade Determinations:
Do you possess one (1) full year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 level that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Lead Pharmacy Technician?
GS-06 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.
Candidates must also demonstrate all of the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) listed below:
Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work.
Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent.
Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers.
Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students.
Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution.
Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases.
Basic knowledge of pharmacy procurement, distribution and storage requirements to maintain a safe working environment. This includes not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and DEA requirements and regulations.
Ability to assist in determining and modifying as necessary: ordering intervals, inventory levels and cost-effective ordering quantities from required sources based on current financial conditions in pharmacy, seasonal variations in drug usage, changing patterns in medical practice, delivery time requirements and urgency of medical need.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., processing prescriptions, opening mail, use of a computer keyboard and mouse, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, etc., stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers etc.); sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of colors. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. The employee must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
Work Environment: Incumbent is required to sit for various lengths of time as well as some bending and lifting. May work at top speed for several hours at a time. Potential exists for exposure to infectious materials, exposure to hazardous and toxic pharmaceutical waste and other substances including by not limited to cytotoxic chemotherapy, solvents, grease, oils and cleaning solutions; sticks or cuts from hypodermic needles, lancets or other sharp items; musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used; unusual musculoskeletal fatigue due to prolonged standing, electronic data processing, etc; eye strain.
