The general practice dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, and/or preventive measures. Provides direction of dental staff and is responsible for dental clinic administration at their assigned location.

The General Dentistry dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:
Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Provide consultation and treatments within the scope of their specific clinical privileges. Providing outpatient, inpatient care for patients eligible for dental care.
Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions.
Function as the primary clinician or subject matter expert responsible for performing procedures, education and training affecting the daily clinical operations of the subspecialty.
Administers local anesthesia.
Periodically examine or evaluate patients to determine need for further dental care.
Performs routine and complex restoration of teeth.
Performs simple and appropriate complex extractions of teeth.
Performs appropriate surgical procedures.
Performs prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work.
Performs routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth.
Performs routine periodontal procedures.
Function as an equal member within the larger team of staff dentists and auxiliary staff.
May provide education and training to members of the medical staff through various conferences, committees and lecture series.
May be assigned administrative or managerial responsibilities through participation in clinical, educational and administrative committees, task groups and/or special projects.
Initiating and expediting requests for consultation intra-facility, inter-facility, (Non-VA) community care, and ordering special tests and studies.
Prescribing medications within defined scope of dental practice.
Ordering relative diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests or radiographs.
Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
Conducting Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exams as requested by Veterans Benefit Administration (VBA) and Regional Office with training and privileges.
Assist in meeting Performance Measures for clinical dental care.
Completes all mandatory training requirements timely, attends mandatory medical center committee meetings and complies with computer and privacy directives.
Assist with other collateral duties as assigned by Chief of Service (supervisor), Chief of Staff, or Director.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: At least two years experience.

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 LBS); light carrying (15 LBS and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
