Duties

Performs a variety of entry level natural resource and ecological resource monitoring assignments which involve closely related steps, processes, procedures, and/or methods. Collects clear-cut natural resource and ecological data (e.g., terrestrial, lotic, and wetland/riparian) following strict guidelines. Performs basic fact-finding work which supports broader assignments of higher graded outdoor recreation planners. Completes basic analyses of natural resource and ecological monitoring data; assembles simple tabular, graphical, and/or narrative representations of monitoring data. Drafts preliminary reports of common natural resource and/or ecological monitoring findings and recommendations.

Qualifications

PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY - To be eligible for appointment to a position in the Internship Program, throughout the duration of the appointment, an individual must: For GS-03: You must have already completed 1 full academic year of post-high school study by the closing date of this announcement (12/18/2023). You must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. Be at least 16 years of age or older. Be seeking a degree that is relevant to this position. Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a half to full-time basis (as determined by the educational institution). Upload an enrollment letter from your educational institution (see Education section). Upload transcripts. If selected you: Must physically report to the duty location that was selected during the application process. The selectee is expected to report to the duty location during the summer break and work 40 hours a week; however, the total hours worked per week can be flexible, if the applicant is currently enrolled in summer courses; Must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement; May be employed throughout the academic year; Must maintain at least a half-time or full-time course load at the time of appointment and throughout the Pathways internship; Must maintain good academic standing, at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale; Must furnish course registration information at the start of each academic term; Must provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term; You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Monitoring work requires regular and recurring periods of physical exertion including walking, bending, climbing, crouching, or stooping over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain. Monitoring protocols require sufficient physical strength to use manual hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices. Monitoring work occasionally requires lifting moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples. Other work is performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. Work Environment: Monitoring data is collected at field sites which are outdoor settings and therefore subject to the risks and discomforts arising from remoteness (e.g., distance from services such as medical offices), weather (e.g., extreme temperatures and precipitation), wildlife (e.g., bites and stings), and diverse terrain (e.g., steep, rocky, or unstable footing). Implementation of standard field-going precautions such as planning (e.g., checking the weather and sharing travel details with the supervisor or higher-graded employee), situational awareness, and proper personal protective equipment (e.g., sun protection, field clothing, gloves, sturdy footwear, a basic first aid kit) are sufficient to mitigate most risks. Accessing field sites requires the use of two- or four-wheel drive vehicles and comes with the risk of vehicular accidents. Safety instructions and risk management protocols will be communicated by the supervisor prior to initiating field work. Individuals driving a government vehicle are required to complete a Defensive Driving Course. Other work is performed in a work environment that involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of offices (e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc.). The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

Enrollment must be with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum.

An enrollment letter can be any qualifying letter written on academic letterhead from an educational institution showing proof of enrollment.
