Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below: To qualify for the GS-07 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-05 level defined as helping develop safety plans, policies, standards and/or training materials; participating in implementing changes to an industrial hygiene program.- OR 1 full year of graduate level education; or superior academic achievement (Superior Academic Achievement Definition) degree in the academic discipline as described below- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:  Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and concepts sufficient to establish new safety, occupational, and environmental health principles, practices, procedures and standards applicable to a full range of professional duties sufficient to plan, organize and make recommendations on improving the safety of workers and the surrounding community. Knowledge of environmental science principles, theories and practices sufficient to identify and resolve common problems involving conventional laboratory and office settings. Skill in using standard data gathering and analysis techniques to collect and review information on environmental activities or quality and to identify and solve problems of a procedural or factual nature. Skill in the development of technical reports and written and oral presentation of such reports sufficient to and assist higher graded staff in applying regulatory requirements. Knowledge of federal laws, agency regulations and requirements related to laboratory and office design, safety and occupational health and indoor air quality. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in:

Industrial Hygiene Series, 0690:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
