The Deputy Director reports to the Director of Communications and Marketing and is a principal advisor on all public engagement activities. As a domain expert and Deputy, the incumbent maintains a close relationship with the AmeriCorps Senior Leadership Team, including the CEO. This individual oversees day-to-day operations and assists the Director of Communication and Marketing with communication with the White House, other federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporate partners.
Duties
Under the direction of the Chief of Communications and Marketing, the Deputy Director oversees a diverse portfolio of communications functions from strategic digital and traditional communications and media engagement to visual, digital, and social communications activities.
Manages and supervises an in-house staff of communications and marketing teams and their corresponding work, including maintenance of the AmeriCorps website, recruitment support, and the management of AmeriCorps's agency wide communications contract. Serves as the acting Chief of Communications and Marketing in the Chief's absence.
The Deputy Director is responsible for oversight in the following areas:
Communications and Marketing: In coordination with the Chief of Communication and Marketing, the Deputy Director develops and implements a strategic communication and marketing plan that maximizes awareness of AmeriCorps, its strategic priorities, and programs and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure goals and strategies are executed. Works with the Chief of Communications and Marketing to lead the implementation of this plan, set goals and work with staff to set incremental targets for success.
Oversees staff to devise creative strategies to institutionalize AmeriCorps' purpose, vision, and values; leveraging data and communications best practices to grow awareness of and affinity for the agency and its mission; and prioritizing relationship development with federal agency leaders that are in the President's cabinet, to facilitate communication opportunities and amplify key agency priorities. Oversees the agency's multi-channel, multi-platform integrated communications plan.
Advises the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior staff on possible impacts to the agency's reputation stemming from policy statements or actions.
Press: In coordination with the Chief of Communication and Marketing and Press Secretary, contributes to the development of an annual plan for press and media relations. This plan covers all strategic needs for the office and provides the blueprint for all priority focus areas for the team. Works with the Chief and Press Secretary to lead the implementation of this plan, set goals and works with staff to set incremental targets for success.
Designs approaches to and assists the Press Secretary with outreach that maintains key relationships among "opinion leader" press, and advises regional offices, state commissions and programs on media issues and opportunities.
Advises the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior staff on possible public and media reactions to policy statements or actions and provides leadership in exploring new avenues and initiatives.
Speechwriting: In coordination with the Chief of Communications supports oversight of speech preparation in support of the CEO, Senior Political Appointees and Board of Directors and others as required. Works collaboratively with the Chief to ensure appropriate coordination with the principal, and that the highest quality standards are maintained.
Administrative Oversight: Directs and oversees the communications and marketing budget in coordination with the Administrative Officer, and assists with policy needs and audit accountabilities, making necessary adjustments as needed.
Team Management: Manages and directs a team of communications and marketing professionals ensuring the ongoing development, growth, goal setting, mentoring, general supervision, and collaboration of the staff. Directs or conducts ongoing analysis and develops recommendations regarding staff organization in coordination with the Chief to ensure the most efficient and impactful team structure.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to at least the lower range of the NY-04 pay band, which would be at or equivalent to, the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes the following and must be met in its entirety: Supervising and developing staff, writing and editing content for external audiences, and Developing and managing multi-channel communications strategies.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
