The Electrician works on all electrical systems at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. The work involves installing, modifying, repairing, performing, preventive maintenance, replacing units, troubleshooting (tracing and locating defects), loading and testing new and existing electrical systems, circuits, motors, fixtures, controls, high voltage, automatic transfer switches, emergency generators and engines (diesel and others).

Duties

Performs a variety of tasks related to electrical equipment and systems for a campus-style/multiple building medical facility. Installs distribution panels, boxes, circuits, fittings, connections and controls. Determines correct application and sizes of wire, conduit, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices as needed for proper and safe operations of electrical systems circuits and equipment. Performs electrical construction work which may involve assisting in the design and layout of electrical construction work and involves measuring, bending of conduit, cutting, installing and pulling of conductors through conduit. Makes high and low voltage termination, runs tests on emergency standby generators and performs necessary troubleshooting and repairs on electrical and electronic components of the emergency generators. Troubleshoots and repairs other electrical and electronic systems and equipment such as fire alarm systems, food carts, industrial laundry equipment and other various machine controls etc. Performs checks on power sources for the following equipment and arranges for required repairs or service, i.e., for monitoring equipment, elevators, canteen and kitchen fire equipment etc. Responds to fire alarms for the medical center. May assist in the evacuation of patients, staff and visitors from malfunctioning elevators. Works independently when called upon to troubleshoot, repair, and make technical decisions after hours, holidays, and weekends. Experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable of the operation and installation of a variety of electrical systems, i.e., HIGH VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION. Experienced in performing journeyman electrical level work based on the National Electrical Codes, National Fire Protection Code and other trade practices. Knowledgeable of required safe work practices and safe and proper operation of systems and equipment. Operates computers and printers for work order management and material requests as well as part of the high tech testing and calibrating equipment used to troubleshoot and analyze electronic data and repair electrical equipment and systems. Knowledgeable of and experienced with various gauges, sizes and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, lighting fixtures, boxes, circuit breakers, transformers, and distribution panels. Experienced in the use of a wide variety of test equipment such as amp meters, volt, meters, megger ohm meters, cable locators, circuit trackers, power analysersm, etc. Skilled in the planning and layout of materials and equipment for installation, troubleshooting, analyzing, modifying and repairing electrical systems and equipment with and without drawings and schematics. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Requirements: Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in uncomfortable positions, and to pull, push, reach over the shoulder, and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perceptions, and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Glasses are permitted. Working Conditions: Work is both outside and inside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, or chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/or uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical (equipment) closets.
